A quarry sells by weight. Every tipper that leaves your gate with granite, chippings, stone dust or laterite is money going out, and every truck you under-weigh is profit you never see. That is why choosing the right weighbridge for quarry in Nigeria is one of the most important equipment decisions an operator makes, alongside the crusher itself.
Quarries are also among the hardest places a weighbridge can work. Overloaded tippers, constant dust, heavy rain, rough approach roads and long operating hours all punish weak equipment. This guide explains what a quarry weighbridge needs, which options suit different sites, and how Kira Scales helps quarry owners from Ogun and Ebonyi to Kogi, Abuja and Cross River.
Why a Quarry Needs a Dedicated Weighbridge
Many smaller quarries still sell by "trip" or by estimated tipper volume. It feels simple, but it leaves room for disputes and losses:
- Overloading goes unnoticed. A driver who heaps the body higher than agreed is taking material you have not been paid for.
- Customers dispute loads. Without a printed ticket showing gross, tare and net weight, it is your word against theirs.
- Stock records are guesswork. You cannot reconcile crusher output with sales if nothing is weighed.
- Road-load enforcement. Hauliers increasingly want to know their axle and gross weights before leaving site.
A properly installed weighbridge solves all four. Each truck is weighed empty on arrival (tare) and loaded on departure (gross), and the system prints the net weight on a ticket the customer signs.
Sizing a Weighbridge for Quarry in Nigeria: Capacity and Deck Length
Quarry traffic is usually a mix of 10- and 12-wheel tippers, trailers and the occasional low-loader moving equipment. Loaded tippers are often heavier than their legal limit, so it is wise to size generously.
- 60 to 80 tonnes suits many small and medium quarries running mainly rigid tippers. Our 60 tonne surface-mounted weighbridge and 80 tonne heavy-duty weighbridge are common choices.
- 100 to 120 tonnes is the safer choice where articulated trucks and heavily loaded trailers are common. See the 120 tonne heavy-duty weighbridge.
- 150 tonnes is for the heaviest sites. Our 150 tonne extra-heavy weighbridge was specified with quarries and ports in mind.
Deck length should match the longest vehicle you weigh so the whole truck sits on the platform at once. Rigid tippers fit on 12 m to 18 m decks; articulated trucks need 18 m to 24 m. Our weighbridge capacity and size guide explains this in more detail.
Pit or Surface-Mounted at a Quarry?
Both work, and the right answer depends on your ground and drainage.
Surface-mounted decks sit on a raised concrete foundation with ramps at each end. They are quicker to build, easier to clean underneath, and avoid water collecting in a pit, which matters a lot during the rainy season. Most quarries choose this option.
Pit-type decks sit flush with the ground, saving space where trucks must approach from the side or where the yard is tight. They need good drainage and regular clearing of stone dust and mud from the pit. The 50 tonne pit-type weighbridge is an example.
Either way, the foundation is half the job. Rocky or soft lateritic ground, slopes and heavy runoff all affect the design. Kira handles the full civil works and foundation as part of weighbridge installation.
Built for Dust, Rain and Overloads
Quarry conditions shorten the life of poorly specified equipment. Look for these points before you buy:
Strong deck and load cells
A heavy steel deck with closely spaced cross-members spreads point loads from tipper wheels. Sealed, stainless or nickel-plated load cells such as the QS-A 30 tonne shear beam load cell resist moisture and dust far better than cheap alternatives.
Overload and shock protection
Trucks braking hard on the deck or dropping off a high kerb create shock loads. Good mounting hardware, stops and correct load cell rating protect the system.
Lightning and surge protection
Quarries are often in open, elevated areas. Lightning is a leading cause of damaged load cells and indicators in Nigeria. A lightning and surge protection kit is a sensible addition.
Clean approaches
Level, well-drained approach slabs at both ends reduce impact on the deck and keep readings stable.
Software, Tickets and Control at the Gate
The weight is only useful if it is recorded properly. For a quarry, we usually recommend:
- A weighbridge indicator connected to a PC running weighbridge software for ticketing and reports, so every load has a numbered ticket with date, time, vehicle number, material and customer.
- A thermal ticket printer at the weighbridge office.
- Optional CCTV snapshots and barriers to stop trucks bypassing the scale or partially driving off the deck. Read our guide to weighbridge tampering to see why this matters.
Daily and monthly reports then let you compare crusher output with what left the gate, by material and by customer.
Calibration and Maintenance on a Quarry Site
Trade use requires a valid Weights and Measures certificate of verification every year. Because quarry weighbridges work so hard, many operators choose more frequent weighbridge calibration, for example every three or six months.
Simple daily habits help too: clear stone and mud from around the deck edges, keep drainage channels open, and check that the indicator returns to zero with the deck empty. If readings drift or one corner reads differently from another, call for a weighbridge repair visit early rather than trading on a faulty scale.
How Kira Scales Supports Quarry Operators
Kira Scales has been supplying and installing weighbridges since 2015, with more than 70 installations across Nigeria, including quarries and construction sites. We supply both locally fabricated and imported decks, carry out civil works, install load cells and software, and provide certified calibration. Our teams travel to every state, so a quarry in Ogun, Ebonyi, Kogi, Niger or the FCT gets the same service as a site in Lagos.
We also repair and upgrade existing quarry weighbridges of any brand, which is often a cost-effective option if your deck is sound but the electronics are failing.
For current pricing, see each product page or request a quote. The cost depends on capacity, deck length, pit or surface design, site conditions and the accessories you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size weighbridge does a quarry need in Nigeria?
Most quarries choose 60 to 120 tonnes with an 18 m to 24 m deck, depending on whether they load rigid tippers or articulated trucks. Sizing above your heaviest expected truck gives a safety margin for overloaded vehicles.
Is a pit or surface-mounted weighbridge better for a quarry?
Surface-mounted weighbridges are more common at quarries because they are easier to clean and avoid water collecting in a pit. Pit-type decks suit tight yards where space for ramps is limited.
How often should a quarry weighbridge be calibrated?
A Weights and Measures certificate of verification is required at least once a year for trade use. Busy quarries often calibrate every three or six months because of the heavy loads and dust.
Can you install a weighbridge at a quarry far from Lagos?
Yes. Kira Scales installs weighbridges in all 36 states and the FCT, including remote quarry sites.
Can an old quarry weighbridge be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, yes. If the deck and foundation are sound, replacing load cells, the indicator and cabling can restore accurate weighing at a lower cost than a new weighbridge.
