Cement is a high-volume, low-margin product. A plant may dispatch hundreds of trucks a day, and small weighing errors on each one add up quickly. Choosing the right weighbridge for cement plant operations means thinking about both ends of the business: raw materials coming in, and bagged or bulk cement going out.
This guide covers what cement manufacturers, grinding plants, cement depots and large block and ready-mix producers in Nigeria should look for, from capacity and layout to software and calibration. Kira Scales supplies, installs and maintains weighbridges in every state, from Ogun, Kogi and Edo to Benue, Sokoto and Cross River.
Where Weighing Happens in a Cement Business
A typical cement operation has several weighing points:
- Raw material intake. Limestone, clay, gypsum, laterite, coal and imported clinker arrive by tipper or trailer. Paying suppliers by weight protects you from short deliveries.
- Bagged cement dispatch. Trucks loaded with 50 kg bags must be checked so the customer receives what was invoiced, and so trucks are not overloaded for the road.
- Bulk cement tankers. Pneumatic tankers are weighed empty and full; the net weight is what the customer pays for.
- Internal transfers. Movements between plants, depots and grinding units need weight records for stock control.
Larger plants often install separate inbound and outbound weighbridges so queues do not build up at the gate.
Sizing a Weighbridge for Cement Plant Traffic
Cement traffic is dominated by articulated trucks and bulk tankers, so most plants choose:
- 80 to 120 tonnes capacity on an 18 m to 24 m deck. The 120 tonne heavy-duty weighbridge and 100 tonne pit-type weighbridge are typical.
- 60 tonnes can be enough for smaller depots and block industries receiving mostly rigid trucks. See the 60 tonne surface-mounted weighbridge.
Always size for the longest and heaviest vehicle you expect, not the average truck. If you are unsure, our weighbridge capacity and size guide walks through the calculation.
Steel or Concrete Deck for Heavy Traffic?
Cement plants run long hours, so deck durability matters.
Steel decks are faster to install and can be lifted for maintenance. Modular steel decks are the most common choice in Nigeria.
Concrete decks are very heavy and stable, and well suited to high-traffic sites where trucks run all day. A concrete-deck weighbridge is worth considering for a dedicated dispatch lane.
Whichever you choose, foundation design and drainage are critical. Kira handles weighbridge installation including civil works, so the deck, foundation and approach slabs are designed together.
Dust, Heat and Electrical Protection
Cement dust is fine and gets into everything. Protect your investment with:
- Sealed load cells with a high ingress protection rating. Our 40/50 tonne compression column load cells are a robust option for heavy decks.
- Sealed junction boxes such as the stainless steel load cell junction box, so dust and moisture do not cause drifting readings.
- Surge and lightning protection, especially where the plant has large motors, kilns and long cable runs.
- A clean, dust-protected weighbridge office for the indicator, PC and printer.
Software, Automation and Fraud Control
With so many trucks, manual ticket writing is slow and invites errors. Most cement businesses benefit from:
- Weighbridge software for ticketing and reports that records each truck, product, customer, order number and driver.
- An outdoor remote display so drivers can see the reading without leaving the cab.
- For busy gates, an unmanned weighbridge automation package with RFID, ANPR cameras and barriers, which speeds up the queue and reduces the chance of manipulation.
Integration with your ERP or invoicing system means dispatch weights flow straight into sales records. Our article on weighbridge software integration explains how this works.
Beyond the Weighbridge: Silos and Bagging
Cement businesses often need other weighing equipment too. Kira supplies silo and hopper weighing systems for stock control in cement silos, and automatic bagging scales for packing. Accurate bag weights at the packer plus an accurate weighbridge at the gate give a full picture of production and sales.
Calibration, Compliance and Maintenance
A cement plant weighbridge is used for trade, so it must carry a valid Weights and Measures certificate of verification, renewed at least yearly. Given the traffic volumes, many plants choose weighbridge calibration every three or six months.
Plan routine checks: clear dust and spilled cement from around the deck, inspect cables and junction boxes, and watch for corner-to-corner differences. Kira provides weighbridge repair and upgrades for any brand, including older Avery and imported systems.
Keeping Queues Short at the Dispatch Gate
Long queues frustrate customers and transporters. A few design choices make a big difference:
- Place the weighbridge so trucks drive straight on and straight off, with no reversing.
- Store tare weights for regular tankers and fleet trucks, re-checking them at set intervals.
- Use traffic lights and barriers so only one vehicle is on the deck at a time.
- Keep a spare indicator or critical parts on site, so a single fault does not stop dispatch.
For very busy plants, two weighbridges, one for inbound and one for outbound, remove the main bottleneck.
Working With Kira Scales
Kira Scales has supplied and installed weighbridges in Nigeria since 2015, with more than 70 installations nationwide. We hold a Certificate of Pattern Approval from the Weights and Measures Department for our weighbridge, offer locally fabricated and imported decks, and send installation teams to all 36 states and the FCT.
Costs depend on capacity, deck type, pit or surface design, site preparation and automation. See each product page for current pricing or request a quote for your plant.

Frequently Asked Questions
What capacity weighbridge does a cement plant need?
Most cement plants choose 80 to 120 tonnes on an 18 m to 24 m deck to handle articulated trucks and bulk tankers. Smaller depots may manage with 60 tonnes.
Do cement plants need separate inbound and outbound weighbridges?
High-volume plants often do, so raw material deliveries and cement dispatch do not share one queue. Smaller sites can manage with one weighbridge and good scheduling.
How do you weigh bulk cement tankers?
The tanker is weighed empty before loading and full afterwards, and the software records the net weight on the ticket. The deck must be long enough for the full tanker.
Can a weighbridge be connected to our ERP system?
Yes. Weighbridge software can export weights and tickets to Excel or integrate with ERP and invoicing systems.
How often should a cement plant weighbridge be calibrated?
At least once a year with a Weights and Measures certificate of verification. Busy plants often calibrate every three or six months.
