A silo full of maize, soybean meal, flour or cement can represent a large share of a business's working capital. Yet many sites still guess what is inside by banging on the side, dropping a weighted tape or reading delivery notes. A silo weighing system in Nigeria replaces that guesswork with a live weight reading from load cells fitted under the silo legs.
This guide covers how silo weighing works, where it pays off, how to size it and what to plan before installation.
What is a silo weighing system?
A silo weighing system is a set of load cells (usually inside weigh modules) placed under each support of a silo or hopper. The load cells send their signals to a junction box, which combines them and passes the total to a weighing indicator or controller. The display shows the weight of the material in the silo after the empty weight is zeroed out.
Unlike level sensors, which struggle with dust, uneven material surfaces and "rat-holing" in powders, load cells measure mass directly. It does not matter whether the grain is heaped on one side or the cement has bridged in the cone.
Kira supplies a complete silo / hopper weighing system for 10 to 200 tonnes, and a 100 tonne silo weighing kit with four load cells, mounts and indicator for common four-leg silos.
Where silo weighing pays off
Feed mills and poultry farms
Feed mills in Ibadan, Kaduna, Kano and Ogun use silo weighing to track maize and soybean stock and to know exactly how much has gone into production. This makes it easier to reconcile purchases against output and spot losses early.
Grain trading and storage
Aggregators and traders holding grain for weeks or months need a reliable stock figure for financing and sales. A weighed silo gives a number you can show a buyer or lender.
Concrete batching and block industries
Cement silos at batching plants and block factories run out at the worst times. Weighing the silo tells you when to order the next tanker of cement. If you are setting up a plant, see our 50 tonne cement silo.
Flour, sugar and food processing
Bakeries and food factories weighing flour or sugar silos get better control over recipe usage and stock.
Silo weighing system Nigeria: sizing the load cells
Getting the capacity right is the most important design step.
- Find the gross weight – empty silo weight plus maximum material weight. Remember density: a silo that holds a given volume of cement weighs far more than the same volume of grain.
- Divide by the number of legs – most silos sit on four legs, some on three or six.
- Add a safety margin – uneven filling, wind on tall outdoor silos and shock loads during filling all push extra load onto individual legs. Load cells are usually sized well above the average per-leg load.
- Choose the mount – weigh modules with self-aligning tops, anti-lift bolts and side restraints keep the silo stable while letting it expand and contract in the sun.
For smaller hoppers and day bins, individual 10 tonne tank weigh modules with self-aligning mounts are often enough.
Installing load cells on an existing silo
Many silos in Nigeria were installed without weighing. Retrofitting is usually possible:
- The silo is jacked or supported one leg at a time.
- A section of leg or base plate is modified to fit the weigh module.
- Load cells are cabled to a junction box and then to the indicator in the control room or office.
- Connected conveyors, discharge chutes and pipework are fitted with flexible connections so they do not carry silo weight.
Retrofit needs careful structural assessment. Our installation teams check the legs, foundation and bracing before any lifting work starts.
Indicators, controllers and data
A simple indicator shows the current weight. For batching or automatic refilling, a panel-mount batching weighing controller can give set-point outputs to start or stop conveyors and feeders. Many sites also want weight sent to a PC for stock reports, which can be added through serial or network outputs.
Protecting the system in Nigerian conditions
Tall steel silos attract lightning, and long load cell cables pick up surges. Rain, dust and heat are constant. Good practice includes:
- Sealed, stainless or nickel-plated load cells with proper IP rating
- Earthing straps across each weigh module so welding or lightning current bypasses the load cells
- Surge protection on cables and power supply
- Cable runs in conduit, away from motor cables
Calibration and accuracy
A silo weighing system should be calibrated after installation and checked periodically. Large silos are often calibrated by adding known quantities of material, or by comparing against a certified weighbridge. Learn more about our calibration services. If you already run a weighbridge, it is also the natural reference for checking incoming material; see our industrial weighbridge range.
What drives cost?
We do not publish fixed prices for silo weighing because no two silos are the same. Cost depends on silo capacity and number of legs, load cell type and material, mount design, the amount of structural work, indicator or controller features, cable lengths and site location. Frequently Asked Questions
Can load cells be added to an existing silo?
Yes, in most cases. The silo is supported one leg at a time while weigh modules are fitted, after a structural check of the legs and foundation.
How accurate is a silo weighing system?
Properly sized and installed load cells give far more reliable stock figures than level sensors or manual dipping. Accuracy also depends on good installation and regular calibration.
How many load cells does a silo need?
One per support leg, so typically four. Three-leg and six-leg silos are also common.
Can I weigh a cement silo at a batching plant?
Yes. Weighing cement silos is common and helps you reorder cement before the silo runs empty.
Will lightning damage silo load cells?
It can, which is why earthing straps across each weigh module and surge protection on cables are recommended for outdoor silos.
How much does a silo weighing system cost in Nigeria?
It depends on silo size, load cell type, mounts and controller. See the product pages for current pricing or request a quote.
