A weighbridge is a cash register for bulk goods. Every ticket decides how much you pay a supplier or charge a customer, so any trick at the scale goes straight to your bottom line. A weighbridge ANPR camera and CCTV security system puts eyes on every weighing, records which vehicle was on the deck, and gives you photo evidence to settle disputes.
This article explains the common forms of weighbridge fraud, how cameras and number plate recognition stop them, and what a practical set-up looks like for a Nigerian site.
Common weighbridge fraud that cameras help prevent
Most scale fraud is simple and relies on nobody watching closely:
- Partial weighing: a wheel or axle left off the deck, or a truck positioned so part of it rests on the approach.
- Extra weight during tare: a person, spare tyre or extra water hidden on the truck when it is weighed empty.
- Vehicle swapping: a lighter truck weighed in place of the loaded one, or tickets issued against the wrong number plate.
- Pushing or pulling: another vehicle or person pressing on the deck to change the reading.
- Operator collusion: manual editing of weights or truck numbers on the ticket.
Our article on weighbridge tampering covers electronic tampering in more depth. Cameras are one of the most effective ways to deter the physical tricks.
How weighbridge ANPR camera and CCTV security works
CCTV snapshots tied to each ticket
Cameras are mounted to view the full deck, both ends, and the driver's side. When the weight is stable and the operator saves the transaction, the software captures still images from each camera and stores them with the ticket. Our weighbridge CCTV camera kit includes four cameras and an NVR set up for exactly this, so each record shows what was on the deck at the moment it was weighed.
ANPR: automatic number plate recognition
An ANPR camera reads the truck's plate and passes it into the weighbridge software. This removes typing errors, stops operators entering a different plate, and lets the software match first and second weighings to the same vehicle automatically. Plate reading works best with good positioning, lighting and clean plates, so a manual override should always be available.
Live view and recording
The NVR records continuous video, so managers can review what happened around any ticket, even from a head office in Lagos or Abuja over the internet where connectivity allows.
Building a complete security set-up
Cameras work best as part of a wider control system:
- Weighbridge software that stores weights, plates, images, operator names and times, and limits who can edit records. See our weighbridge software for ticketing and reports.
- Traffic lights and barriers that only allow a truck on or off when the reading is captured. The weighbridge traffic lights and boom barrier gate set controls the flow.
- Positioning sensors to confirm the vehicle is fully on the deck.
- A remote display so drivers can see the weight themselves.
- RFID tags for regular vehicles, using a weighbridge RFID reader and tag kit.
For sites that want to reduce manual handling entirely, the unmanned weighbridge automation package brings ANPR, RFID and barriers together. Learn more in our post on unmanned weighbridge automation.
Practical tips for Nigerian sites
Light the deck at night
Many depots, ports and quarries weigh trucks after dark. Without good lighting, snapshots and plate reading suffer. Plan lighting with the cameras.
Protect power and signal cables
Storms and power surges damage cameras and NVRs. Use surge protection and an inverter or UPS, and route cables in conduit away from the load cell cables.
Mount cameras out of reach
Cameras at ground level can be turned, covered or damaged. Mount them on poles or the operator cabin.
Keep plates readable
Dusty laterite roads and quarry sites cover plates quickly. Encourage drivers to keep plates clean, and position cameras to reduce glare and dust.
Review footage regularly
Cameras deter fraud only if someone checks. Spot-check images against tickets each week, especially for loads with unusual weights.
Set clear rules for operators
Technology works best with simple written procedures. Decide who can edit a ticket, who approves a re-weigh, and how long images and video are kept. Give each operator their own software login so every action is traceable. Agree with transporters that tickets with photos are the record used to settle disputes. These rules cost nothing, yet they turn cameras from a passive recording into an active control that drivers and staff respect.
Who benefits most
- Ports and container depots in Apapa, Tin Can and Onne, where many transporters use the same scale.
- Quarries and cement plants dispatching high volumes of tippers.
- Agro-processing plants and grain buyers in Kano, Kaduna and Ibadan, where purchase weights decide payments to suppliers.
- Scrap and recycling yards where tare manipulation is common.
- LPG and petroleum depots that need tight records for every tanker.
What drives the cost
We do not publish prices online. Cost depends on the number of cameras, ANPR versus snapshot-only cameras, NVR storage, software features, barriers and lights, cabling distances and installation. For current pricing see the product pages or request a quote. Existing weighbridges of any brand can be upgraded; see our weighbridge accessories and upgrades services.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ANPR on a weighbridge?
ANPR stands for automatic number plate recognition. A camera reads the truck's plate and enters it into the weighbridge software automatically, linking it to the ticket.
Can CCTV be added to an existing weighbridge?
Yes. Cameras, an NVR and software can be added to most existing weighbridges, including older and imported brands.
How many cameras does a weighbridge need?
Many sites use around four: one over each end of the deck, one on the driver side and one for the plate or overall view. Larger or busier sites may need more.
Does ANPR work at night?
It can, but it needs suitable cameras and good lighting. A manual plate entry option should always be available as backup.
Do weighbridge cameras stop all fraud?
They deter and record most physical tricks, but they work best with software controls, barriers, regular calibration and someone reviewing the records.
