When you buy or upgrade a weighbridge, you will be asked to choose between two families of sensors. The debate over digital vs analogue load cells is not about which is "modern" – both are current, reliable technology. It is about which one gives your site the right balance of accuracy, diagnostics, ease of repair and overall cost.
This guide explains how each type works, where each one shines, and what we usually recommend for weighbridges and industrial scales in Nigeria.
How Analogue Load Cells Work
An analogue load cell contains strain gauges bonded to a steel body. When weight is applied, the steel bends very slightly, the gauges change resistance, and the cell sends a tiny voltage signal (measured in millivolts) down its cable.
On a weighbridge, the cables from all the cells meet in a junction box, where the signals are combined into one. A single cable then carries that combined signal to the indicator, which converts it to a weight.
Analogue cells such as the QS-A 30 tonne double-ended shear beam load cell are the most widely used type in the country. They are straightforward, well understood by technicians, and compatible with almost every standard indicator.
How Digital Load Cells Work
A digital load cell has the same strain-gauge sensor inside, but it also carries its own small electronics. The cell converts its reading to a digital value before sending it out, usually over a data connection such as RS485. Each cell has an address, so the indicator receives a separate, labelled reading from every cell rather than one combined signal.
The 30 tonne digital load cell for weighbridges is a typical example. It must be paired with a compatible digital indicator or controller.
Digital vs Analogue Load Cells: Key Differences
Diagnostics
This is the biggest practical difference. With analogue cells, the indicator sees one combined signal. If a cell starts failing, you may only notice that weights drift or one corner reads wrong, and a technician must test cells one by one.
With digital cells, the indicator can show each cell's reading. A faulty or overloaded cell is easy to identify, often without lifting the deck. For busy sites, this means faster repairs and less downtime.
Corner adjustment
Analogue weighbridges are corner-adjusted with trimming resistors in the junction box, which takes skill and time. Digital systems are usually adjusted in software, cell by cell, which is quicker and easier to repeat after a replacement.
Signal strength and cable runs
Analogue signals are very small and can be affected by long cables, moisture in connectors and electrical noise from generators or nearby machinery. Digital signals are more robust over distance and less sensitive to interference.
Tamper resistance
Because analogue signals are combined in a junction box, someone with access can interfere with the wiring. Digital systems make that harder, since each cell communicates individually and changes show up. If fraud is a concern on your site, read our post on weighbridge tampering.
Lightning and surge exposure
Both types are vulnerable to lightning and power surges, which are common during Nigerian storms. Digital cells carry electronics in each cell, so good earthing and surge protection are essential. Our weighbridge lightning and surge protection kit is designed for exactly this.
Compatibility and replacement
Analogue cells from different makers are broadly interchangeable when capacity, output and mounting match. Digital cells usually need to match the indicator's communication protocol, so replacements should come from a compatible range. Ask your supplier about long-term availability before choosing.
Cost drivers
Digital cells and indicators generally cost more upfront, while analogue systems are cheaper to buy and to source parts for. Lifetime cost depends on how much downtime matters to you, how far your site is from technicians, and how often cells are damaged. See the product pages for current pricing or request a quote for your capacity and number of cells.
Which Should You Choose?
As a general guide:
- Choose analogue if you want a proven, widely supported system with low upfront cost, or if you are replacing cells on an existing analogue weighbridge.
- Choose digital if your weighbridge is busy and downtime is expensive, if fraud or tampering is a concern, or if your site is remote and you want faster fault-finding.
- Upgrading an old weighbridge? Many older decks, including Avery and locally built ones, can take a new set of cells and a new indicator. Our weighbridge digital upgrade kit and upgrades service cover this.
For an existing weighbridge with analogue cells, you do not have to convert everything at once. Switching to digital means replacing all the cells and the indicator together, so it often makes sense to plan it alongside other refurbishment work.
Installation and Calibration
Whichever type you pick, installation quality decides the result. Cells must sit level on clean mounting plates, cables must be protected and dry, and the system must be earthed. After installation, the weighbridge should be calibrated with certified test weights and verified. Kira Scales provides certified calibration and the annual Weights and Measures certificate of verification needed for trade.
Our teams have installed and repaired weighbridges in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and across every state, on both analogue and digital systems from many brands.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are digital load cells more accurate than analogue load cells?
Both can achieve legal-for-trade accuracy. Digital cells mainly make fault-finding and corner adjustment easier, which helps keep accuracy stable over time.
Can I mix digital and analogue load cells on one weighbridge?
No. A weighbridge needs one system throughout, because digital and analogue cells connect to different types of indicator.
Do digital load cells need a junction box?
Digital systems still use connection boxes to link cell cables, but they do not combine signals with trimming resistors the way analogue junction boxes do.
Can an old Avery weighbridge be upgraded to digital load cells?
Often yes, if the deck and foundation are sound. A site inspection confirms whether the deck can take the new cells and mounting hardware.
Are digital load cells harder to repair in Nigeria?
A failed digital cell is easy to find, but the replacement must be compatible with your indicator. Buying from a supplier who stocks matching cells avoids delays.
