When you plan a new truck scale, one of the first decisions is the deck itself. Should the platform be steel, or steel-reinforced concrete? The concrete deck vs steel deck weighbridge question matters because the deck affects how quickly you can install, how the scale copes with Nigerian weather and traffic, and what maintenance looks like over the next 15 to 20 years.
Both types use the same principle: the deck rests on load cells, the load cells send signals to an indicator, and the indicator shows the weight. The difference is what the truck actually drives on.
How each deck type is built
Steel deck weighbridges
A steel deck is fabricated from heavy steel plate with internal beams or ribs, usually in modules of a few metres each. The modules are delivered to site, lifted into position on the foundation and connected. Examples include our 30–50 tonnes modular steel weighbridge and the 60 tonne surface-mounted weighbridge with an 18 m steel deck.
Concrete deck weighbridges
A concrete deck uses steel frames or "pans" that are filled with reinforced concrete, either on site or in a casting yard. The finished deck is much heavier than a steel deck of the same size. Our concrete-deck weighbridge, 60–100 tonnes is designed for sites with heavy, constant traffic.
Concrete deck vs steel deck weighbridge: side-by-side comparison
Installation time
Steel decks are faster. Once the foundation has cured, modules can be placed, connected and calibrated in a short time. Concrete decks need the concrete to be poured and cured properly before the scale can be loaded, which adds time to the programme. If your site cannot stop trucks for long, steel usually wins.
Strength and stability
Concrete's extra mass makes the deck very stable and less prone to vibration when heavy tippers brake or turn on it. That can help on quarries, cement plants and aggregate yards where loaded trucks cross the scale all day. Well-designed steel decks are also very strong; the key is correct plate thickness and beam design for your heaviest axle loads.
Corrosion and weather
Steel needs good paint or galvanising, especially near the coast in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar where salty air speeds up rust. Concrete does not rust on the surface, but the reinforcement inside can corrode if water gets in through cracks. Either way, drainage and regular inspection matter.
Maintenance and repair
On a steel deck, damaged sections can be cut out and re-plated, or a whole module can be replaced. On a concrete deck, cracking or spalling requires concrete repair, and replacing a module is heavy work. Steel decks also make it easier to reach load cells and cables for inspection on many designs. Our weighbridge repair team works on both types.
Relocation
If there is any chance you will move the weighbridge, choose steel. Steel modules can be unbolted and transported. Concrete decks are effectively permanent.
Transport and access
Concrete decks are heavy and may need larger cranes. Steel modules are lighter to transport, which helps on remote sites in the north or the Niger Delta with limited road access.
Which type is right for your business?
Choose a steel deck if:
- You need the scale running quickly with minimal downtime.
- You may relocate in future, or you are on leased land.
- You want easier access to load cells and simpler module replacement.
- Your site is remote and transporting heavy components is difficult.
Choose a concrete deck if:
- Traffic is very heavy and continuous, such as at quarries, cement depots or ports.
- You want a heavy, stable deck that resists vibration.
- The installation is permanent and you can allow time for curing.
- You prefer a non-steel driving surface that will not need repainting.
Many businesses in Lagos, Ogun and the Abuja axis choose steel for speed and flexibility, while some high-traffic quarry and cement sites prefer concrete. There is no single right answer; it depends on your trucks, your site and your plans. Our guide to types of weighbridges covers the wider picture.
The foundation matters as much as the deck
Whatever deck you choose, accuracy depends on a level, properly designed foundation with good drainage. A poor foundation will undermine a strong deck. Kira offers a weighbridge civil works and foundation package up to 24 m covering both pit-type and surface-mounted installations. If you want to understand this stage in detail, read our post on weighbridge foundation and civil works.
Load cells, indicators and accessories
Deck material does not change the electronics. Both types use heavy-duty load cells, such as the QS-A 30 tonne double-ended shear beam load cell, a junction box and a weighbridge indicator. Add software, a ticket printer, CCTV or ANPR depending on how you want to control your weighing operation.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices, but these factors drive cost for both deck types:
- Capacity and deck length (from about 12 m to 24 m for most trucks).
- Steel or concrete quantities, and whether the deck is locally fabricated or imported.
- Pit-type or surface-mounted installation and the extent of civil works.
- Load cell type and indicator.
- Site location and transport distance.
- Optional software and security accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a concrete deck weighbridge stronger than a steel deck?
A concrete deck is heavier and very stable under constant heavy traffic, but a properly designed steel deck is also strong enough for the same capacities. The right choice depends on traffic, site and whether you may relocate.
Which weighbridge deck is faster to install?
Steel decks are faster because the modules are fabricated in advance and placed on the cured foundation. Concrete decks need extra time for the deck concrete to cure.
Can a concrete deck weighbridge be relocated?
In practice, no. Concrete decks are treated as permanent, while steel modular decks can be unbolted and moved.
Do steel deck weighbridges rust in coastal areas like Lagos and Port Harcourt?
Steel can corrode faster near the coast, so good surface protection, drainage and periodic repainting are important.
Does the deck type affect weighbridge accuracy?
Accuracy depends mainly on the load cells, foundation, levelling and calibration. Both deck types can be calibrated and verified for trade use.
