Fertiliser blending plants and feed mills sell product in 25 kg and 50 kg bags, and every bag is a promise to the customer. Underfilled bags cause complaints and regulatory trouble; overfilled bags quietly give away product on every shift. A bagging scale for fertiliser and feed mills fills each bag to a set weight automatically, faster and more consistently than filling by hand on a platform scale.
This guide explains how bagging scales work, what to look for and how to build a simple, reliable bagging line.
How a bagging scale works
Most open-mouth bagging scales follow the same sequence:
- Product flows from a bin or silo into a weigh hopper (net weighing) or directly into the bag (gross weighing).
- A controller runs fast feed until the weight is close to target, then slow "dribble" feed for accuracy.
- Feeding stops at the target weight.
- The operator places a bag on the spout and a clamp holds it.
- The weighed product drops into the bag, the clamp releases and the bag moves on to closing.
Load cells under the hopper or spout measure weight continuously, and the controller learns to correct for the product still in the air when the gate closes.
Main types of bagging scale
Automatic bagging / filling scales
Kira's automatic bagging / filling scale for 25 kg to 50 kg bags handles free-flowing products such as granular fertiliser, grains and pelleted feed. Weighing happens in a hopper while the previous bag is being filled, which keeps throughput high.
Open-mouth bag fillers
An open-mouth bag filling machine for 50 kg fertiliser and feed is built for tough, dusty and sometimes corrosive products. It suits blending plants in Kano, Kaduna and Kogi and feed mills in Ogun, Oyo and Plateau.
Small-pack fillers
For premixes, concentrates and retail packs, a semi-automatic powder and grain packing machine, 1 kg to 5 kg fills smaller bags by weight.
What to look for in a bagging scale for fertiliser and feed mills
Product flow
Granular fertiliser and pellets flow freely and suit gravity feeders. Mash feed and powders can bridge or flood; they may need a belt or screw feeder and agitation. Tell the supplier exactly what you are bagging.
Corrosion resistance
Fertiliser is hard on steel. Stainless contact parts, sealed load cells and protected electrics last much longer in blending plants. Clean down regularly.
Dust control
Feed and fertiliser dust is a health hazard and coats electrics. Look for dust extraction points on the spout and a sealed controller enclosure.
Accuracy and speed
Ask how the scale performs on your product at your target speed, and test before acceptance. Accuracy and speed trade off against each other; aim for consistent bags rather than the highest bag count.
Controller features
Useful features include target weight presets, automatic in-flight correction, bag counting, totals per shift and data output for reports.
Completing the line: closing and check-weighing
A filled bag is not finished until it is closed and checked.
- Closing – a bag closing conveyor with column sewing head carries bags straight from the filler to stitching. Smaller operations use a handheld closer; see our bag closer sewing machine guide.
- Check-weighing – spot-check bags on a separate, calibrated heavy-duty platform scale. This confirms the bagger is on target and gives you records if a customer complains.
- Incoming material – weigh raw materials on a weighbridge so you can reconcile tonnes in against bags out. See our industrial weighbridge range.
Calibration and legal metrology
Bags sold by weight must contain what the label says. Calibrate the bagging scale after installation and on a regular schedule, and check it daily with known test weights. Scales used for trade should carry Weights and Measures verification. Kira provides certified calibration and supplies calibration test weights (Class M1) for daily checks.
Common bagging problems
- Bags drifting overweight – product build-up on the hopper or gate; clean and recalibrate.
- Inconsistent weights – irregular feed from the bin; check for bridging and moisture in the product.
- Slow filling – gate settings too cautious; adjust fast/slow cut-off points.
- Load cell faults – often caused by moisture, corrosion or welding on the frame. Kira supplies replacement load cells.
- Dust leaks at the spout – worn bag clamp seals or poor extraction.
What drives cost?
We do not publish fixed prices here. Cost depends on bag size range, output per hour, product type, stainless versus painted construction, feeder type, dust extraction, controller features and whether you need a full line with conveyor and closing. Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is an automatic bagging scale for 50 kg bags?
A well-set bagging scale gives consistent bag weights on free-flowing products. Accuracy depends on product flow, speed and regular calibration, so test it on your own product.
Can one bagging scale handle both 25 kg and 50 kg bags?
Yes, most allow you to set different target weights; the spout and clamp must suit both bag sizes.
Is a bagging scale suitable for mash feed?
It can be, but mash and powders flow less freely than pellets, so a screw or belt feeder may be needed.
Does fertiliser damage bagging scales?
Fertiliser is corrosive, so stainless contact parts, sealed load cells and regular cleaning are important.
Do bagging scales need Weights and Measures verification?
Scales used to sell products by weight should be calibrated and verified by Weights and Measures.
How much does a bagging scale cost in Nigeria?
It depends on capacity, product, construction and line features. See the product pages for current pricing or request a quote.
