Oil and gas products are valuable, regulated and potentially dangerous. Depots and gas plants need to know exactly how much product leaves in each tanker, and they need equipment that works safely around flammable materials. A properly specified weighbridge for oil and gas depots gives you accurate loading records, helps prevent short loading and overfilling, and supports reconciliation between your tanks and your sales.
This guide is for petroleum tank farms, LPG storage and filling plants, lubricant blending plants and haulage companies in Nigeria. Kira Scales has installed weighing systems at LPG storage plants, including load cells under gas tanks, and serves all 36 states.
Why Depots Weigh Tankers
Depots traditionally measure product by volume, using meters and dip readings. Weighing adds an independent check:
- LPG is sold by weight. For gas plants, the weighbridge is the main measure of what each bulk truck receives.
- Volume changes with temperature. Weight does not, which makes it a useful cross-check on metered volumes.
- Overfilling is a safety risk. Weighing helps ensure tankers are not loaded beyond safe limits.
- Reconciliation and loss control. Comparing tank stock, meter readings and weighbridge tickets reveals losses quickly.
- Dispute resolution. A printed ticket with gross, tare and net weights is clear evidence for customers and transporters.
Sizing a Weighbridge for Oil and Gas Depots
Petroleum and LPG tankers are usually articulated trucks. Most depots choose:
- 60 to 80 tonnes for typical product tankers. See the 60 tonne surface-mounted weighbridge and 80 tonne heavy-duty weighbridge.
- 100 to 120 tonnes for larger trailers or where headroom is wanted. The 120 tonne heavy-duty weighbridge suits busy depots.
- 18 m to 24 m deck length so the full tractor and trailer are weighed in one pass.
Liquid loads move as a truck brakes, so drivers should stop gently and wait for the reading to settle. A good indicator with motion detection will only print a stable weight.
Safety Considerations Around Flammable Products
Depots have strict safety rules, and the weighbridge must fit within them:
- Location. The weighbridge is normally placed away from loading gantries and hazardous zones, at the entrance or exit. Your safety officer and the relevant regulators should agree the position.
- Electrical equipment. Indicators, PCs and printers usually sit in a control room outside the hazardous area. Where equipment must be closer, it should be suitably rated.
- Earthing and lightning protection. Proper earthing and a lightning and surge protection kit protect both the equipment and the site.
- Surface-mounted design. A surface-mounted deck avoids pits where vapours or water could collect, which is one reason many depots prefer it.
Kira's weighbridge installation team plans civil works, cabling and earthing around your site's safety requirements.
Weighing LPG Storage Tanks
Weighing does not stop at the gate. Many gas plants also monitor stock by weighing storage tanks directly. Kira supplies and installs an LPG storage tank weighing system with load cells under each tank support, giving a live reading of product in the tank.
Comparing tank weight with weighbridge dispatch tickets is a powerful way to detect losses. If the tank weight drops by more than the total of the tickets issued, you know to investigate quickly rather than discovering the gap at month end. For smaller operations, tank weighing load cell modules suit day tanks and blending vessels, and our 150 kg gas cylinder scale is used at filling points for individual cylinders.
Control, Software and Security
For depots, control of the weighing process matters as much as accuracy:
- Weighbridge software records tanker number, product, customer, order and seal numbers with each weight.
- CCTV snapshots and ANPR cameras link each ticket to the actual vehicle.
- Barriers and traffic lights stop trucks leaving before weighing out.
Read about weighbridge tampering to see how manipulation happens and how controls prevent it.
Calibration and Compliance
A depot weighbridge used in trade needs a valid Weights and Measures certificate of verification, renewed at least once a year. Because of the value of product, many depots choose weighbridge calibration every three or six months.
Tank weighing systems should also be checked regularly. Kira provides certified calibration and load cell supply and replacement for weighbridges and tank systems.
Good Weighing Practice for Tankers
Tankers need a little extra care on the weighbridge:
- Drive onto the deck slowly and stop smoothly, so the liquid settles quickly.
- Wait for the indicator to show a stable reading before printing.
- Re-tare tankers regularly instead of relying on old stored tare weights, since fittings, spare tyres and fuel change the empty weight.
- Record seal numbers on the ticket so the load can be traced to the customer.
Clear procedures like these make your weighbridge records stronger in any dispute with customers or transporters.
Why Depots Choose Kira Scales
Kira Scales has supplied and installed weighing systems in Nigeria since 2015, with more than 70 weighbridge installations, including LPG storage plants with load cells under gas tanks. We offer locally fabricated and imported decks, civil works, software, tank weighing and certified calibration, with teams travelling to depots in Lagos, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kano, Kaduna, the FCT and every other state.
Costs depend on capacity, deck length, site safety requirements and accessories. See the product pages for current pricing or request a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why should a petroleum depot weigh tankers if it already uses meters?
Weight is an independent check on metered volume and does not change with temperature. It helps catch meter errors, short loading and product losses.
What capacity weighbridge is suitable for LPG and fuel tankers?
Most depots use 60 to 120 tonnes on an 18 m to 24 m deck, depending on the size of the tankers they load.
Can a weighbridge be installed inside a hazardous area?
Weighbridges are normally placed away from loading gantries, with electronics in a safe control room. The location should be agreed with your safety team and regulators.
Can you weigh LPG storage tanks directly?
Yes. Load cells under each tank support give a live reading of the product weight in the tank.
How often should a depot weighbridge be calibrated?
At least yearly with a Weights and Measures certificate of verification. Many depots calibrate every three or six months.
