Feed is usually the largest running cost on a poultry or fish farm. That is why many farmers and agro-entrepreneurs choose to make their own feed, or sell feed to neighbouring farms. A well-planned small feed mill setup Nigeria farmers can run with a few workers gives control over quality, ingredients and cost, and can grow into a profitable business on its own.
This guide explains the core machines (hammer mill, mixer and pelletizer), the weighing you need, and how to plan the layout, whether you are in Ogun, Oyo, Kaduna, Plateau or Delta.
How a small feed mill works
Most small feed mills follow the same steps:
- Receiving and storing ingredients such as maize, soybean meal, groundnut cake, wheat offal, fishmeal, limestone and premix
- Grinding whole grains and cakes to the right particle size
- Weighing each ingredient according to the formula
- Mixing everything into a uniform blend
- Pelleting (optional) for pelleted or floating fish feed
- Cooling, bagging and weighing finished feed
Mash feed stops after mixing. Pelleted feed adds pelleting and cooling.
The core machines
Hammer mill
The hammer mill grinding machine (around 250 kg/h) grinds maize and other ingredients. Screen size controls how fine the meal is. Choose screens to suit the birds or fish you feed. For a deeper look at choosing one, read our hammer mill buying guide.
Feed mixer
A vertical feed mixer (1 tonne per batch) uses a central screw to lift and circulate ingredients until they are evenly blended. Uniform mixing matters because small-inclusion ingredients such as premix, salt and medication must reach every bird or fish in the right amount. Follow the recommended mixing time and do not overfill.
Pelletizer
An animal feed pelletizer (around 200 kg/h) presses mash through a die to make pellets for poultry and fish. Pellets reduce waste, stop birds picking out favourite ingredients and suit fish farming. Fresh pellets are warm and moist, so allow them to cool and dry before bagging to prevent mould.
Supporting equipment
- A maize sheller if you buy maize on the cob
- A grain cleaner to remove stones and dust before grinding
- A bag closer to seal finished bags
Small feed mill setup Nigeria: weighing is the heart of the mill
A feed formula is a list of weights. If the weighing is wrong, the feed is wrong, no matter how good the machines are. Plan weighing at three points:
Ingredient intake. Weigh every delivery of maize and soybean meal. A 5 tonne platform scale handles bags and pallets; trucks call for a weighbridge.
Batch weighing. Weigh each ingredient for every batch before it goes into the mixer. A floor or platform scale handles the main ingredients. For premix, vitamins and medication, use a smaller, more precise bench scale, because small errors in small ingredients have a big effect.
Finished feed. Weigh every bag before sealing. Consistent bag weights protect your customers and your reputation. Larger mills use an automatic bagging scale (25 to 50 kg) to speed this up.
Keep every scale accurate with regular calibration.
Planning layout, power and storage
Layout
Arrange machines in process order so ingredients flow from storage to grinding, weighing, mixing, pelleting and bagging without being carried back and forth. Keep raw materials and finished feed separate.
Power
Add up the motor power of the hammer mill, mixer and pelletizer. If they will run together on a generator, size it for the combined load with some margin. Some farms run machines one at a time to use a smaller generator.
Storage
Store ingredients and feed off the floor on pallets, in a dry, well-ventilated building protected from rats and birds. Maize must be dry before storage; a grain moisture meter helps you check deliveries.
Hygiene
Clean the mill, mixer and pelletizer when changing formulas, especially between medicated and non-medicated feed.
Quality checks every small mill should run
Good feed mills check their own product rather than waiting for customer complaints. Simple, low-cost routines include:
- Moisture checks on incoming maize with a grain moisture meter, rejecting or drying wet grain before it goes into storage
- Visual checks for mould, insects and foreign matter in every delivery
- Particle size checks after grinding, comparing a sample against your target
- Bag weight checks by re-weighing a few finished bags each day
- Batch records listing the weight of each ingredient, the date and the operator
These records help you trace any problem back to a specific batch or delivery, and they build trust with farmers who buy your feed.
Getting the formula right
Machines do not make good feed by themselves. Work with an animal nutritionist or a trusted formula, and adjust as ingredient quality changes. Test new batches on a small group of birds or fish before switching your whole flock.
What drives the cost of a small feed mill?
We do not quote prices in this guide. The main factors are:
- Capacity of the hammer mill, mixer and pelletizer
- Mash only, or mash and pellets
- Electric or engine drive, and generator size
- Weighing equipment, from bench scales to a weighbridge
- Building, storage and installation
- Delivery to your state

Frequently Asked Questions
What machines do I need to start a small feed mill in Nigeria?
The core machines are a hammer mill and a feed mixer, plus accurate scales. Add a pelletizer if you want pelleted poultry or fish feed, and a bag closer for finished bags.
Can a small pelletizer make floating fish feed?
Standard flat-die pelletizers make sinking pellets. Floating fish feed is usually made with an extruder, so confirm the feed type you need before buying.
How long should feed be mixed in a vertical mixer?
Follow the manufacturer's recommended mixing time for your mixer and batch size. Under-mixing leaves premix and medication unevenly spread.
Why must ingredients be weighed instead of measured by bucket?
Ingredients differ in density, so a bucket of maize and a bucket of soybean meal weigh different amounts. Weighing is the only way to follow a formula accurately.
How much space do I need for a small feed mill?
You need room for ingredient storage, the machines in process order, and dry storage for finished feed. Plan the building around the flow of materials rather than the machines alone.
