If you are buying a new weighbridge or replacing sensors on an old one, the question of QS-A load cell vs column load cell comes up quickly. Both are proven designs, both are used on truck scales across Nigeria, and both can give accurate, legal-for-trade results. The difference lies in how they carry the load, how they are mounted, and how they behave on your particular site.
This guide explains each type in plain terms, compares them side by side, and helps you decide which one makes sense for your weighbridge, whether it sits at a quarry in Ogun, a depot in Apapa or a grain store in Kano.
What Is a QS-A Load Cell?
The QS-A is a double-ended shear beam load cell. It is a solid steel bar, supported at both ends, with the load applied in the middle through a steel ball or link. Strain gauges inside the beam measure the tiny shear deformation as weight is applied, and the cell converts that into an electrical signal for the indicator.
A typical example is our QS-A 30 tonne double-ended shear beam weighbridge load cell. Key traits:
- Low profile – the cell sits low under the deck, which suits surface-mounted and shallow pit designs.
- Self-restoring mounting – the ball-and-cup arrangement lets the deck move slightly when trucks brake, then settle back to centre.
- Simple alignment – installers can set it up quickly with standard mounting plates.
- Widely used – it is one of the most common weighbridge load cells in Nigeria and much of Africa, so replacement is straightforward.
What Is a Column Load Cell?
A column load cell (also called a canister or compression load cell) is a vertical cylinder. The load presses straight down on the top of the column, and strain gauges measure the compression. Columns usually sit in a cup-shaped base with a rocker or pendulum design, so the column can tilt slightly and return to vertical.
Examples include the 40 / 50 tonne compression column load cell for weighbridges and the 20 tonne stainless compression load cell. Key traits:
- High capacity in a compact body – columns handle large loads in a small footprint.
- Self-centring rocker action – good at absorbing side forces from trucks entering, braking and turning.
- Often stainless and hermetically sealed – many models have strong protection against water and dust.
- Common on heavy-duty and port weighbridges – where very heavy, frequent traffic is the norm.
QS-A Load Cell vs Column Load Cell: Side-by-Side
Here is how the two compare on the points that matter most to Nigerian weighbridge owners.
Mounting height and deck design
QS-A cells are low and wide. They suit decks designed around them, especially surface-mounted weighbridges where ramp height matters. Column cells are taller, so the deck and foundation must be designed with enough clearance. You generally cannot swap one type for the other without changing mounting hardware.
Handling side loads
Both designs are self-restoring. Column cells with rocker mounts are often preferred for very heavy, fast-moving traffic because the rocker absorbs horizontal forces well. QS-A cells cope well with normal truck traffic when the deck has proper check rods or stops.
Water and dust protection
Flooded pits are a real issue in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Warri during the rainy season. Many column cells are fully welded stainless designs with high protection ratings. Good QS-A cells are also sealed, but the cable entry and mounting area must be kept clear of standing water. Whichever you choose, drainage is the first defence – see our post on weighbridge load cell problems and replacement.
Installation and service
QS-A cells are quick to fit and replace with a jack and basic tools. Column cells also replace easily once the deck is lifted, but alignment of the rocker must be checked carefully. On either type, the number of cells (often 6, 8 or 10 on a long deck) and the condition of the junction box matter as much as the cell itself.
Cost drivers
Price depends on capacity, material (alloy steel or stainless), protection rating, cable length, mounting kit and whether the cells are analogue or digital. See each product page for current pricing or request a quote – we will match the cell to your deck rather than sell you a type that does not fit.
Which One Should You Choose?
A simple way to decide:
- Replacing cells on an existing weighbridge? Stay with the type the deck was built for. Changing types usually means new mounting plates and sometimes deck modification. Our load cell supply and replacement team will confirm the exact model.
- Building a standard 40 to 80 tonne surface-mounted weighbridge? QS-A cells are a cost-effective, well-supported choice.
- Heavy traffic at ports, quarries or container depots? Column cells are often specified for their strength under constant, heavy loading.
- Wet or low-lying site? Prioritise sealing and protection rating, and plan proper drainage either way.
- Want better diagnostics? Consider a 30 tonne digital load cell, which can report each cell's reading individually.
The right answer also depends on the deck design. A well-made deck on the wrong cells will not perform properly, so it is best to choose the cell and deck together.
Fitting and Calibration Matter More Than the Label
Even the best load cell gives poor results if it is badly installed. Common problems we see on repair jobs across Nigeria include uneven mounting plates, cells sitting in water, damaged cables, and missing earthing. After any cell is replaced, the weighbridge should be corner-tested and calibrated with certified test weights.
Kira Scales provides certified weighbridge calibration, including the annual Weights and Measures certificate of verification required for trade use. Our teams travel to all 36 states and the FCT, so whether you are in Abuja, Onitsha or Kaduna, we can supply, fit and calibrate the right cells.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace QS-A load cells with column load cells?
Usually not without changing the mounting hardware and sometimes the deck itself. It is simpler and cheaper to replace like with like unless you are upgrading the whole weighbridge.
Which load cell is more accurate, QS-A or column?
Both can meet legal-for-trade accuracy when properly installed and calibrated. Installation quality, drainage and calibration affect accuracy more than the cell type.
How many load cells does a weighbridge use?
Most truck scales use 6 to 10 load cells depending on deck length and design. Longer decks, such as 18 m to 24 m, typically use more cells.
Are column load cells better for flooded pits?
Many column cells are fully sealed stainless designs with high protection, which helps. However, no load cell should sit in standing water, so pit drainage is essential.
Do you supply load cells for any weighbridge brand?
Yes. Kira Scales supplies and replaces load cells for any brand, including Avery, Mettler Toledo, Chinese makes and locally built weighbridges.
