Overloaded trucks damage roads, wear out tyres and suspensions, and create real safety risks. They can also expose a company to penalties and disputes. An axle weighbridge for overload control lets you check how much weight each axle is carrying before a truck leaves your gate, so problems are corrected on site rather than discovered on the highway.
This guide explains how axle weighing works, how it differs from a full-deck weighbridge, and how to choose the right setup for a Nigerian quarry, cement depot, port, factory or fleet yard.
Why axle loads matter, not just total weight
A truck can be within its total gross weight and still be overloaded on one axle. Poor loading, for example piling aggregate or bags towards the front, puts too much weight on a single axle. That axle then stresses the road surface, tyres, springs and the chassis.
Checking axle loads helps you:
- Spread cargo evenly before dispatch.
- Reduce tyre bursts, broken springs and axle failures.
- Stay within the axle load limits that apply on public roads.
- Protect your company reputation with customers and regulators.
- Settle disputes with transporters using recorded axle data.
How an axle weighbridge for overload control works
An axle weighbridge is a short, strong weighing platform, usually long enough for one axle or an axle group. The truck drives across it, and the system records the load on each axle in turn. Adding the axle loads gives the vehicle's total weight.
In-motion axle weighbridges
An in-motion system weighs each axle as the truck rolls slowly across. It is quick and suits high-volume gates. Our in-motion axle weighbridge handles up to 30 tonnes per axle and vehicles up to 150 tonnes gross, and it is installed flush with the road so trucks do not have to climb ramps.
Static axle weighing
With static weighing, the truck stops with each axle on the platform in turn. This is slower but more accurate than in-motion weighing, and it is common for checks where precision matters.
Portable axle pads
For spot checks, enforcement-style inspections or sites that move, portable axle weighing pads can be placed under the wheels on firm, level ground. They are easy to transport and need no civil works, which makes them practical for road contractors and mobile teams.
Axle weighbridge vs full-deck weighbridge
A full-deck weighbridge weighs the whole truck at once. It is the standard choice for buying and selling goods by weight, because one stable reading of gross weight is the most accurate way to weigh a vehicle.
An axle weighbridge is mainly for checking distribution and overloads. In general:
- For trade and invoicing: use a full-deck weighbridge, such as our 80 tonne heavy-duty weighbridge (18–21 m), calibrated and verified by Weights and Measures.
- For overload checks and axle distribution: use an axle scale or axle pads.
- For both: some sites run a full-deck weighbridge for trade and add an axle scale at the exit gate, or use a weighbridge indicator and software that can record axle-by-axle readings on the main deck.
If you are deciding on a full truck scale first, our guide on weighbridge capacity and size will help.
Where axle weighing is used in Nigeria
- Quarries and aggregate yards in Ogun, Ebonyi, Ondo and the FCT, where tippers are often loaded by excavator and front axles are easily overloaded.
- Cement and building materials depots dispatching bagged cement and blocks.
- Ports and container terminals around Apapa, Tin Can and Onne, where axle checks help control heavy container trucks.
- Agro-processing and grain depots in Kano, Kaduna and Katsina sending loaded trailers on long trips.
- Fleet operators and haulage companies that want to protect their own vehicles.
What to consider before you buy
Traffic volume
High-volume gates benefit from in-motion weighing. Lower-volume sites can use static weighing or pads and save on civil works.
Accuracy needs
Decide whether you only need overload alerts or precise records. Static and full-deck weighing give tighter accuracy than in-motion weighing.
Site layout
In-motion axle scales need a straight, level approach on both sides so the truck crosses at a steady, slow speed. Plan the lane before installation with our weighbridge installation team.
Data and reporting
Pair the scale with a weighbridge indicator and weighbridge software with ticketing and reports so each axle reading, truck number and time is saved and printed. You can also add an outdoor remote display so drivers see their readings immediately.
Calibration
Any scale used for decisions must be calibrated. For trade use, a Weights and Measures certificate of verification is required at least once a year, and many sites choose more frequent checks. See our weighbridge calibration service.
What drives the cost
We do not quote prices online, because each project is different. The main factors are:
- In-motion, static or portable pad system.
- Axle capacity and the number of platforms.
- Civil works for a flush installation.
- Indicator, software and display.
- Site location and access.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an axle weighbridge?
It is a short weighing platform that records the load on each axle of a truck in turn. The axle loads are added together to give the total vehicle weight.
Can an axle scale replace a full weighbridge?
For overload checks it can, but for buying and selling by weight a full-deck weighbridge is usually preferred because it weighs the whole vehicle in one stable reading.
How accurate is in-motion axle weighing?
In-motion weighing is convenient and fast but less precise than static weighing. Trucks must cross slowly and steadily on a level approach for the best results.
Why is my truck overloaded on one axle when the total weight is fine?
Cargo is usually loaded unevenly, often too far forward or backward. Redistributing the load spreads weight across the axles.
Do portable axle weighing pads need civil works?
No deep civil works are needed, but the pads must sit on firm, level ground for reliable readings.
