Your weighbridge has served you for years. Now the readings drift, the deck shows rust, and repair bills are adding up. Should you overhaul it or start again? The weighbridge refurbishment vs replacement decision is one of the biggest a site manager faces, and getting it right can save a lot of money and downtime.
This guide walks through each part of the weighbridge, what can be refurbished, the warning signs that point to replacement, and how to make a decision you will not regret.
Why a weighbridge wears out
A weighbridge works outdoors, carrying loaded trucks day after day. Across Nigeria, it also faces heavy rains, flooding, coastal salt air in Lagos and Port Harcourt, dust and heat in the north, and power surges. Over time:
- Steel decks corrode, crack at welds or lose stiffness.
- Load cells suffer from water, lightning and shock loads.
- Cables and junction boxes get damaged by rodents or flooding.
- Foundations settle, crack or hold water.
- Indicators become outdated or spare parts disappear.
The question is which of these parts are worn, and whether the core structure is still sound.
Weighbridge refurbishment vs replacement: the part-by-part check
1. The foundation
The foundation is the starting point. If it is level, solid and drains well, it can usually be reused, which saves a large part of the cost of a new scale. If it has sunk, cracked badly or floods regularly, a new deck on the old foundation will not perform well. In that case, civil repairs or a new foundation are needed, and replacement often becomes the better option.
2. The deck
Surface rust and worn paint can be cleaned and recoated. Cracked welds and damaged plates can be repaired, and individual modules can be swapped. If the main beams are heavily corroded, bent or the deck is undersized for today's trucks, it is time for a new deck. Our weighbridge refurbishment and deck replacement service covers both options up to 150 tonnes.
3. Load cells
Faulty load cells are among the most common problems and are usually straightforward to replace. A full set of new load cells often restores accuracy on an otherwise sound bridge. Options include the QS-A 30 tonne double-ended shear beam load cell and column-type cells. Read more in our post on weighbridge load cell replacement.
4. Electronics
Old indicators, junction boxes and cables can be upgraded to modern equipment with data output, software and printing. This is often where refurbishment delivers the biggest operational gain. If you run an old mechanical or analogue Avery scale, a weighbridge digital upgrade kit can convert it, and our post on Avery weighbridge repair in Nigeria explains the background.
5. Capacity and length
Trucks in Nigeria have grown longer and heavier. If your bridge was built for rigid trucks and now sees articulated trailers, or regularly runs near its capacity, refurbishment will not fix the mismatch. Replacement with a longer, higher-capacity deck is usually the right call.
Signs that refurbishment makes sense
- The foundation is level, dry and structurally sound.
- The deck's main beams are in good condition.
- Capacity and length still suit your trucks.
- The problems are mainly load cells, cables, junction box or indicator.
- You want to add software, printing, cameras or automation.
Signs that replacement makes more sense
- The foundation has settled, cracked or floods.
- The deck is heavily corroded, bent or repeatedly cracking.
- The scale is too short or too light for current vehicles.
- Repairs keep recurring and downtime is hurting the business.
- Spare parts for the existing design are no longer available.
- You are expanding or relocating the weighbridge.
If replacement is right, compare options such as our 60 tonne surface-mounted weighbridge, the 100 tonne pit-type weighbridge, and the 120 tonne heavy-duty weighbridge.
Don't forget downtime
A weighbridge out of service can stop sales, purchases and dispatch. When comparing options, plan for how long you can operate without weighing. Refurbishing electronics and load cells can often be scheduled into a short shutdown. A full replacement takes longer, especially if civil works are needed, but steel decks on a sound foundation can reduce the time.
Calibration after any work
Whether you refurbish or replace, the scale must be tested and calibrated before use. For trade use, a Weights and Measures certificate of verification is required at least once a year, and many businesses choose more frequent checks. See our weighbridge calibration service.
What drives the cost
We do not publish prices online. The decision is driven by the condition of the foundation and deck, number of load cells to replace, electronics to upgrade, the capacity and length needed, civil works, and site location. A site survey gives you a clear comparison of both routes. See product pages for current pricing or request a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a weighbridge last?
A well-built weighbridge with a sound foundation and regular maintenance can last many years. Load cells and electronics usually need replacement before the deck and foundation do.
Can an old weighbridge be refurbished instead of replaced?
Yes, if the foundation and main deck structure are sound. Load cells, cables, junction boxes and indicators can be replaced to restore accuracy.
Can a new deck be installed on an old foundation?
Often yes, if the foundation is level, structurally sound and drains well. It should be inspected and adapted to the new deck's bearing points.
When should a weighbridge be replaced completely?
Replace it when the foundation has failed, the deck is badly corroded or damaged, or the scale is too short or too light for your current trucks.
Do I need to recalibrate after refurbishing a weighbridge?
Yes. Any repair or upgrade should be followed by calibration and, for trade use, Weights and Measures verification.
