A weighbridge is a long steel structure sitting outdoors, wired to sensitive electronics. In Nigeria's thunderstorm season, that makes it vulnerable. A nearby strike or a surge on the power line can destroy load cells, the junction box and the indicator in seconds. Good weighbridge lightning protection is one of the cheapest ways to avoid an expensive repair and days without weighing.
This guide explains how lightning damages weighbridges, the layers of protection you need, and simple habits that keep your scale safe.
How lightning and surges damage a weighbridge
Most damage does not come from a direct strike on the deck. It usually comes from:
- Nearby strikes that raise the ground voltage around the weighbridge. Current tries to flow through the deck, load cells and cables to reach a different earth point.
- Induced surges in long cables between the deck and the operator's office.
- Mains power surges from storms, grid switching or generator changeovers, entering through the indicator and computer.
The result can be burnt load cells, damaged junction boxes, failed indicators and destroyed computer ports. Faults may show as no reading, drifting weights or errors. Our post on weighbridge load cell replacement covers the symptoms.
Weighbridge lightning protection: the layers you need
No single device makes a weighbridge immune, but layered protection greatly reduces the risk.
1. Proper earthing
Everything should share one well-designed earth system: the deck, load cells, junction box, indicator and building. Earth rods are driven at the weighbridge and bonded together. A good earth gives surge current an easy, low-resistance path to the ground instead of through the electronics. Earth resistance should be tested, especially in dry, sandy soil common in the north.
2. Load cell bonding straps
Flexible earth straps across each load cell let current bypass the cell rather than flowing through it. This is a simple but important detail, and it is often missing on older or poorly installed weighbridges.
3. Surge protection on signal cables
Surge protectors fitted on the load cell and indicator cables limit voltage spikes before they reach the electronics. Our weighbridge lightning and surge protection kit includes protection for the signal and power lines.
4. Mains power protection
Fit surge protection on the power supply to the indicator, computer and printer. A good inverter or UPS adds clean, stable power and protects against outages during weighing.
5. Lightning arresters for tall structures
Camera poles, light masts and cabin roofs near the weighbridge can attract strikes. These should have proper lightning conductors and earthing, designed by a qualified electrician.
6. Good cabling practice
- Keep load cell cables in steel conduit or buried ducts.
- Route signal cables away from power cables.
- Use a sealed stainless steel load cell junction box to keep water and surges out.
- Keep cable runs as short as practical.
Do digital load cells help?
Digital load cell systems are often more resistant to interference, and some have built-in protection. They still need proper earthing and surge protection, though. Options such as the 30 tonne digital load cell for weighbridges can be part of a protected system, but they do not replace it.
Habits that reduce storm damage
- Switch off and unplug the indicator and computer when a storm approaches and weighing has stopped, if your site procedures allow.
- Avoid weighing during heavy lightning.
- Check earth connections and bonding straps during routine maintenance.
- Inspect the junction box for water after heavy rain.
- Record faults after storms, so patterns can be traced.
Include protection in new installations
The easiest time to add protection is when a weighbridge is first installed. Earth rods, bonding straps, conduits and surge protectors can be built into the civil works and cabling plan at little extra effort. Ask your supplier to show the earthing design and test results at handover. When you compare quotes for a new scale, check that lightning and surge protection are included rather than left as an afterthought, because adding them later means extra digging and downtime.
Regions with high risk
Storms are common across much of Nigeria during the rainy season. Sites in the south, such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri, Calabar and Uyo, see long rainy seasons, while the Middle Belt and the north experience intense storms. Weighbridges at ports, quarries, cement plants and agro-processing sites in open areas are especially exposed. See our page on weighbridges in Port Harcourt for more on coastal installations.
After a lightning strike
If you suspect damage:
- Stop weighing and check for visible damage or burning smells.
- Do not keep resetting the indicator.
- Call a technician to test each load cell, the junction box and the indicator.
- Replace damaged parts and check the earthing.
- Recalibrate before trading again. For trade use, Weights and Measures verification is required at least yearly. See weighbridge calibration.
What drives the cost
We do not publish prices online. Cost depends on soil conditions and the earthing needed, number of load cells, cable lengths, existing electrical installation and accessories such as cameras and light masts. Adding protection to an existing weighbridge is usually far less disruptive than repairing storm damage. See the product page for current pricing or request a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can lightning damage a weighbridge?
Yes. Nearby strikes and power surges can damage load cells, junction boxes, indicators and computers, even without a direct hit on the deck.
How do I protect my weighbridge from lightning?
Use a single, well-tested earth system, bonding straps across load cells, surge protectors on signal and power lines, and good cabling practice.
What are the signs of lightning damage on a weighbridge?
Common signs include no reading, unstable or drifting weights, error messages on the indicator and burnt components in the junction box.
Can lightning protection be added to an old weighbridge?
Yes. Earthing, bonding straps and surge protectors can be added to most existing weighbridges of any brand.
Do I need to recalibrate after lightning damage?
Yes. After damaged parts are replaced, the weighbridge must be recalibrated before it is used for trade.
