At most weighbridges, the only person who sees the weight is the operator inside the office. The driver sits in the cab, the customer waits at the gate, and everyone has to trust the number on the ticket. A remote display for weighbridge sites changes that. It is a large outdoor screen that shows the live weight to everyone at the scale, at the same moment the operator sees it.
It is one of the simplest and most effective accessories you can add, whether you run a quarry in Ebonyi, a grain market in Kano, a depot in Apapa or a scrap yard in Aba.
What Is a Weighbridge Remote Display?
A remote display (also called a scoreboard or repeater display) is a large digital screen connected to the weighbridge indicator. It repeats whatever weight the indicator shows. It does not weigh anything by itself and does not change calibration – it simply makes the reading visible from a distance.
The weighbridge outdoor remote display / scoreboard with 5-inch digits is a typical example, designed to be read from a truck cab across the yard. For smaller floor and platform scales, a compact unit such as the 3-inch LED remote display does the same job at shorter range.
Benefits of a Remote Display for Weighbridge Operations
Fewer disputes
When the driver can see the weight for themselves, there is far less argument at the window. Drivers and customers trust a number they watched appear. This matters most where goods are bought by weight – grain, cassava, scrap, cocoa, sand and granite.
Faster traffic
Drivers can see when the reading is steady and when the operator has captured the weight, so they move off promptly. On busy sites, small time savings per truck add up through the day.
Better positioning on the deck
A driver who can see the display will notice if the reading looks wrong – for example if a wheel is off the deck or the truck is still moving. This leads to more accurate weighing.
Transparency and anti-fraud
A public display makes it harder for anyone to quietly alter a weight, because the number has already been seen. It works well alongside a weighbridge CCTV camera kit and our advice on weighbridge tampering.
Supports unmanned weighing
On automated sites with barriers, RFID and traffic lights, the display is how drivers know the weighing is complete. It is a standard part of the unmanned weighbridge automation package.
How to Choose a Remote Display
Digit size and viewing distance
Bigger digits can be read from further away. Think about where trucks stop, how far the cab will be from the display, and whether drivers will view it in strong sunlight. Outdoor weighbridge displays typically use large, bright LED digits for daytime visibility.
Outdoor protection
The display will face sun, heavy rain, dust and harmattan haze. Choose a weatherproof housing designed for outdoor use, and mount it under a small canopy if possible.
Compatibility with your indicator
The display connects to the indicator's serial output (often a dedicated scoreboard or RS232 port). Check that your indicator supports a remote display and that the data format matches. Indicators such as the XK3190-D10 weighbridge indicator with RS232 are commonly used with displays and software at the same time. Older indicators may need replacing or an adaptor.
Cable distance
Signal cables have practical length limits. Plan the indicator and display positions so the cable run is reasonable and protected in conduit away from truck wheels.
Power supply and surge protection
The display needs a stable power supply. Because it sits outdoors on a pole, it is exposed to lightning and surges during storms. Good earthing and a lightning and surge protection kit protect both the display and the indicator.
Where to Mount It
Good placement makes all the difference:
- At the exit end of the deck, facing the driver's side of the cab.
- High enough to be seen over bonnets, but within comfortable viewing angle.
- Visible from the gate or waiting area if customers stand there.
- On a solid pole or wall, out of the path of turning trucks.
- On two-way weighbridges, consider a display at each end or a double-sided unit.
Common Remote Display Problems
Like any outdoor electronics, displays can develop faults. The most common are:
- Blank display – often a power supply fault, a tripped breaker or surge damage after a storm.
- Display not matching the indicator – usually a communication setting or data format mismatch, sometimes after the indicator has been replaced.
- Frozen or flickering digits – a loose or damaged signal cable, or water in a connector.
- Dim or missing segments – ageing LEDs or moisture inside the housing.
Most of these are quick to fix on site. Because the display does not affect the recorded weight, weighing can continue while it is repaired, but drivers lose the visibility that prevents disputes, so it is worth fixing promptly. Our weighbridge repair team handles displays alongside indicators and load cells.
Installation and Commissioning
Installing a remote display usually involves mounting the unit, running power and signal cables in conduit, connecting to the indicator and setting the communication parameters. After installation, the technician should check that the display matches the indicator exactly at different loads. Fitting a display does not alter calibration, but it is a good moment to book a weighbridge calibration check.
Kira Scales supplies and installs remote displays on new and existing weighbridges of any brand – Avery, Mettler Toledo, Chinese makes and locally built decks – in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Ibadan and every other state. See our weighbridge accessories page for related equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a remote display affect weighbridge accuracy?
No. It only repeats the reading from the indicator and does not change calibration or the weight recorded.
Can I add a remote display to an old weighbridge?
Yes, if the indicator has a suitable serial output. If not, the indicator can be upgraded to one that supports a display.
How far away can drivers read a weighbridge remote display?
It depends on digit size, brightness and sunlight. Large outdoor LED displays are designed to be read from a truck cab across the deck.
Is a remote display waterproof?
Outdoor weighbridge displays use weatherproof housings, but mounting them under a small canopy adds extra protection from rain and sun.
Can one indicator drive a remote display and software at the same time?
Many weighbridge indicators have more than one output, allowing a display and a computer to connect together. Check your indicator model before buying.
