Not every site that weighs trucks will still be in the same place in three years. Road contractors move from one section of highway to the next, quarries open new pits, and agro buyers follow the harvest. For these businesses, a portable weighbridge can be a smarter investment than a permanent pit-type scale tied to one piece of land.
If you are researching a portable weighbridge Nigeria suppliers can install, this guide explains the two main types available, where each one works well, and the questions to ask before you buy.
Portable weighbridge Nigeria options: what "portable" really means
A portable weighbridge is a truck scale designed to be installed without a deep pit or heavy permanent foundation, and to be lifted, moved and re-installed at a new site. There are two broad families.
Pitless (relocatable) modular weighbridges
These are full-length steel decks, usually built in modules, that sit on simple concrete pads or a levelled compacted base. The whole truck stands on the deck at once, so you get a single gross weight just like a fixed weighbridge. Our portable pitless weighbridge, 30–100 tonnes is built this way: modules are bolted together on site, cabled to the indicator and calibrated, then unbolted and transported when the project moves.
Portable axle weighing pads
Axle pads are low, flat wheel-load platforms that you place under each wheel or axle. The system adds up the readings to give axle loads and total vehicle weight. A set of portable axle weighing pads (10–30 t per axle) can travel in the back of a pickup, which makes them useful for spot checks, enforcement-style overload checks and remote sites with no power or civil works.
The trade-off is simple. Full-deck pitless weighbridges give better accuracy and faster throughput. Axle pads give maximum mobility but are slower per truck and more sensitive to ground level and driver technique.
Who uses portable weighbridges
Across Nigeria, we see portable systems chosen by:
- Road and civil engineering contractors who need to weigh laterite, stone base and asphalt deliveries along a project corridor, then move to the next contract.
- Quarries and borrow pits in places like Ogun, Ebonyi or Kogi where the working face moves and the operator does not want to sink money into a pit on land that may be exhausted.
- Agro buyers and aggregators who set up seasonal buying points for maize, soybeans, sorghum or cashew in states such as Kaduna, Niger, Benue and Kano.
- Mining and solid minerals operators on leased or remote land.
- Companies on rented premises who want to take their weighbridge with them when the lease ends.
If your site is permanent, has heavy round-the-clock traffic and you own the land, a fixed installation is usually the better long-term choice. Our weighbridge installation team can advise on either route.
Portable vs fixed: the honest trade-offs
A portable weighbridge is not simply a cheaper weighbridge. It is a different tool. Consider these points.
Foundation and ground
"Pitless" does not mean "no preparation". A relocatable deck still needs a firm, level, well-drained base and short concrete or steel bearing pads under each load cell point. Soft ground, laterite that turns to mud in the rainy season, or a sloping site will cause drift and inaccurate readings. Ramps on each end must also be stable so trucks drive on smoothly.
Accuracy and legal use
A properly installed and calibrated pitless deck can be verified for trade use in the same way as a fixed weighbridge. Every time it is moved, however, it must be re-levelled and recalibrated before readings are relied on, and a Weights and Measures certificate of verification is required at least once a year for trade use. Axle pads are excellent for checking loads but are generally less suited to high-volume commercial weighing. See our weighbridge calibration service for details.
Durability
Portable decks are built to be handled, so check the steel thickness, the lifting points and how the modules connect. A deck that is too light will flex under fully loaded tippers. Load cells and cables are exposed during moves, so good cable protection and a sealed stainless steel load cell junction box matter more than on a fixed bridge.
Throughput
A full-length portable deck weighs a truck in one stop. Axle pads may need the truck to stop several times or to be positioned carefully, which slows the queue when many vehicles arrive at once.
Capacity and size: choosing the right portable system
Start with your heaviest vehicle, not your average one. In Nigeria, fully loaded tippers, trailers and articulated trucks commonly push past 40 tonnes, and overloaded vehicles can go well beyond that. Common choices are:
- 30–50 tonne decks for tippers and rigid trucks on construction and quarry sites.
- 60–100 tonne decks where articulated trucks and trailers will cross.
- Axle pads rated per axle, chosen so the heaviest single axle sits comfortably within the pad rating.
Deck length should cover your longest vehicle with every axle on the platform at once. If you are unsure, our weighbridge capacity and size guide explains how to match length and capacity to your fleet.
Indicators, printing and power on remote sites
A portable site is often off-grid, so plan the electronics carefully:
- A rugged indicator such as the XK3190-A9 weighing indicator for weighbridges, mounted in a lockable cabin or container office.
- A ticket printer so every load has a printed record for drivers and site managers.
- A reliable power source: generator, inverter or solar with battery backup, plus surge protection, since storms are common in many regions.
- Simple weighbridge software if you need daily reports for the head office.
Ask your supplier to demonstrate how the system is disconnected, packed and reconnected. A well-designed portable weighbridge should be quick to recommission without rewiring.
What drives the cost of a portable weighbridge
We do not publish fixed prices because every site is different. The main cost drivers are:
- Type: full-length pitless deck or axle pad set.
- Capacity and length: heavier and longer decks need more steel and more load cells.
- Load cells and indicator: analogue or digital load cells, indicator features and printer.
- Site preparation: bearing pads, ramps and drainage at each location.
- Transport and relocation: distance between sites, crane or forklift hire and recommissioning.
- Accessories: software, remote display, cameras and lightning protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a portable weighbridge as accurate as a fixed weighbridge?
A full-length pitless deck installed on a firm, level base and properly calibrated can match a fixed weighbridge for accuracy. Axle pads are accurate for checks but are more sensitive to ground level and vehicle positioning.
Does a portable weighbridge need a foundation?
It does not need a deep pit, but it still needs a firm, level, well-drained base with bearing pads under each load cell point and stable ramps.
Do I need to recalibrate a portable weighbridge after moving it?
Yes. After every move the deck should be re-levelled and recalibrated, and trade use requires a Weights and Measures certificate of verification at least yearly.
Can a portable weighbridge be used for road construction projects in Nigeria?
Yes. Road contractors commonly use relocatable decks or axle pads to weigh aggregate, laterite and asphalt deliveries, then move the scale to the next section of the project.
How much does a portable weighbridge cost in Nigeria?
Cost depends on type, capacity, deck length, electronics and site preparation. See the product page for current pricing or request a quote from Kira Scales.
