Palm oil is part of daily life in Nigeria, and states such as Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo, Delta, Ondo and Rivers have a long tradition of processing it. Yet much of the oil is still extracted with methods that lose oil, take hard labour and give uneven quality. Modern palm oil processing machines help small and medium mills extract more oil from every bunch, work faster and produce a cleaner product that sells at a better price.
This guide walks through each stage of processing, the machine used at each step, and how weighing helps you track yield and profit.
The palm oil process in brief
Fresh fruit bunches (FFB) go through these stages:
- Reception and weighing of fresh fruit bunches
- Sterilisation – cooking the bunches to stop the enzymes that raise free fatty acids and to loosen the fruit
- Threshing – separating the fruitlets from the bunch
- Digestion – mashing the hot fruit to break open the oil cells
- Pressing – squeezing crude oil out of the mash
- Clarification – separating oil from water and solids
- Drying and storage of the clean oil
- Nut and fibre handling – nuts go to kernel recovery; fibre is often used as boiler or cooking fuel
Processing bunches soon after harvest helps keep free fatty acids low, which is a key quality measure for buyers.
Key palm oil processing machines
Steriliser
Bunches or loose fruit are cooked with steam or boiling water in a steriliser or large cooking vessel. Good sterilisation makes threshing easier and improves oil quality.
Thresher
A thresher tumbles cooked bunches so the fruitlets fall out, replacing beating by hand. Empty bunches are removed for mulching or fuel.
Digester
The digester is a heated vessel with rotating arms that pound the fruit into a mash. Thorough digestion is essential for good extraction.
Screw press
The press is the heart of the mill. A palm oil screw press handling around 500 kg of fruit per hour squeezes the digested mash continuously, separating crude oil from fibre and nuts. Compared with manual or hydraulic batch presses, a screw press gives steadier throughput and less hard labour. Many small screw presses combine digestion and pressing in one unit.
Clarifier
Crude oil from the press contains water, sludge and fibre. A clarification tank lets the oil settle and float so it can be skimmed off. Careful heating and settling give clear, bright oil.
Kernel recovery
Nuts from the press can be dried and cracked to recover palm kernels, which are sold separately. A nut cracker and separation system adds a second income stream.
Weighing: how you measure yield and profit
A palm oil mill buys bunches by weight and sells oil and kernels by volume or weight. Without accurate weighing you cannot tell whether your machines are extracting well or whether you are paying too much for fruit.
Weighing fresh fruit bunches
- Small mills weighing bunches or baskets can use a 5 tonne platform scale or a heavy-duty floor scale.
- Hanging baskets or nets of fruit can be weighed with a 1,000 kg hanging crane scale.
- Mills receiving fruit by truck need a weighbridge to record the net weight of every load and pay outgrowers fairly.
Weighing output
Weigh drums of oil on a drum and barrel scale before sale or storage, and weigh bagged kernels on a platform scale. Comparing oil and kernel output with FFB intake gives your oil extraction rate. Tracking it daily shows when the press needs adjustment, when fruit is over-ripe or under-ripe, or when losses are creeping in.
Keep all scales accurate with regular calibration. This matters most where you pay outgrowers by weight.
Planning a small palm oil mill
Match capacity to fruit supply
Size your machines to the bunches you can reliably receive each day during peak and lean seasons. A press that sits idle half the year ties up money.
Balance the line
Make sure sterilisation, threshing and digestion can keep the press fed. Running out of cooked fruit is a common cause of low output.
Power and fuel
Decide between diesel engines and electric motors. Fibre and empty bunches can often be used as fuel for heating, reducing fuel costs.
Water and effluent
Sterilisation and clarification use water and produce palm oil mill effluent. Plan proper effluent pits so it does not pollute streams and farmland.
Maintenance
Screw presses wear at the screw, cage and bearings. Keep spare wear parts, check the cone or back-pressure setting regularly and clean the press at the end of each run so residue does not harden. A well-maintained press keeps extraction steady through the season.
Hygiene and storage
Store oil in clean, closed containers away from sunlight and water to preserve quality.
What drives the cost of palm oil processing machines?
We do not publish prices in this article. The main factors are:
- Capacity of the press and supporting machines
- Single machines or a complete line (steriliser, thresher, digester, press, clarifier)
- Engine or electric drive
- Material quality and thickness
- Kernel recovery equipment
- Weighing equipment, from platform scales to a weighbridge
- Delivery to your state and installation

Frequently Asked Questions
What machines are needed to start a palm oil mill?
A basic mill needs a steriliser, thresher, digester, screw press and clarification tank, plus scales for weighing fruit and oil. Kernel recovery equipment can be added later.
How much palm oil can a screw press produce per hour?
It depends on the press capacity, fruit quality and how well the fruit is cooked and digested. Track your own oil extraction rate by weighing fruit in and oil out.
Why is my palm oil high in free fatty acids?
Free fatty acids rise when fruit is bruised or left too long before sterilisation. Process bunches soon after harvest and sterilise them properly.
How do I calculate oil extraction rate?
Divide the weight of oil produced by the weight of fresh fruit bunches processed. Accurate weighing at both ends is essential for a reliable figure.
Do I need a weighbridge for a palm oil mill?
If fruit arrives by truck, a weighbridge records each delivery and supports fair payment to outgrowers. Smaller mills can use platform or floor scales.
