Paint makers, lubricant blenders, chemical distributors, food processors and water treatment plants all move liquids in 200-litre drums and 1,000-litre IBC totes. Knowing exactly what is in each container matters for filling, dispatch, stock control and recipes. IBC and drum weighing scales are built for this job: low enough to roll a drum on, strong enough for a full tote, and simple for operators to use.
This guide explains the options and how to choose the right one for your site in Nigeria.
Why weigh drums and IBCs at all?
Volume markings on drums and totes are rough guides. Real contents vary with fill level, temperature and product density. Weighing gives you:
- Accurate filling – fill to a set net weight rather than eyeballing a line.
- Honest dispatch – customers receive the quantity on the invoice, and you can prove it.
- Stock control – partly used drums are weighed instead of guessed.
- Recipe accuracy – batching chemicals, oils and syrups by weight.
- Returns and residue checks – weighing returned containers shows what was actually used.
IBC and drum weighing scales: the main types
Low-profile drum scales
A drum scale (also called a barrel scale) is a compact, low platform with a short ramp, so a drum can be rolled or pushed on with a drum trolley without lifting. Kira's drum / barrel scale, 300 kg to 600 kg, low profile with ramp is designed for 200-litre drums of oil, paint, chemicals and food ingredients.
IBC tote scales
An IBC (intermediate bulk container) holding 1,000 litres of liquid can weigh well over a tonne when full. An IBC scale has a platform sized to the standard tote footprint and the capacity to match. Our IBC tote weighing scale, 1.5 tonne, 1.2 m x 1.2 m is sized for typical 1,000-litre totes, filled by forklift or pallet truck.
Floor scales with ramps
Where you weigh drums, totes and other pallets on the same scale, a general-purpose floor scale with a ramp may suit better. A 3 tonne digital floor scale with loading ramp handles mixed loads, while a 2 tonne U-beam pallet floor scale lets a pallet truck drive straight in and lower the load.
Pallet truck scales
If containers need to be weighed wherever they sit in the warehouse, a 2 tonne pallet truck scale weighs the load on the forks while you move it.
How to choose the right scale
1. Capacity
Add the container weight to the heaviest product you fill. Dense products such as some chemicals and syrups make a full container much heavier than its litre size suggests. Leave headroom so the scale is not always at its limit.
2. Platform size and height
Measure the drum diameter or IBC footprint and the equipment used to load it. Low platforms and ramps reduce lifting injuries; pit-mounting a floor scale removes the ramp entirely in busy areas.
3. Material
For corrosive chemicals, food products or washdown areas, choose stainless steel or a well-protected painted platform with stainless load cells. Spills of acids, caustics and solvents shorten the life of mild steel quickly.
4. Indicator features
Look for tare (to remove the container weight), set-point or check-weighing functions for filling, and printer or PC output if you need records. A waterproof stainless XK3190-A15 indicator suits wet and chemical areas; a weighing indicator with built-in printer gives a ticket for each container.
5. Hazardous areas
If you fill flammable solvents, consult a specialist on hazardous-area requirements before choosing electrical equipment. Standard scales are not designed for explosive atmospheres.
Filling drums and IBCs by weight
A common set-up in Lagos, Ogun and Port Harcourt blending plants is:
- Place the empty container on the scale and press tare.
- Open the filling valve.
- Watch the net weight rise; the indicator signals when the target is close.
- Close the valve at target weight and print or record the result.
For higher volumes, the indicator's set-point outputs can control a valve automatically, reducing overfill and operator error.
Care and calibration
- Keep the platform clear of debris that can jam under it.
- Clean spills quickly, especially corrosive products.
- Do not drop drums onto the platform; roll them on.
- Check the scale daily with a known weight and calibrate regularly. Learn more about our calibration services.
If you sell by weight, your scale should be verified by Weights and Measures, as required for trade use.
What drives cost?
We do not quote fixed prices online. The main cost drivers are capacity, platform size, mild steel versus stainless steel, indicator features (printer, outputs, waterproofing) and whether you need a ramp, pit frame or automation. See the product pages for current pricing or request a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
What capacity scale do I need for a 1,000-litre IBC?
It depends on the product density, but a full IBC often weighs over a tonne. A 1.5 tonne IBC scale suits most water-like liquids; denser products may need more.
Can a normal floor scale weigh drums?
Yes, if it has the right capacity and a ramp or pit frame. A dedicated low-profile drum scale is easier because drums can be rolled on without lifting.
Is a stainless steel drum scale necessary?
For corrosive chemicals, food products or wet areas it is strongly recommended, because spills quickly damage painted mild steel.
Can a drum scale control filling automatically?
Yes. Indicators with set-point outputs can open and close a filling valve at a target weight.
Do drum scales need calibration?
Yes. Check daily with a known weight and calibrate regularly; scales used for trade need Weights and Measures verification.
