Knowing how often to calibrate a crane scale saves you from two costly problems: selling goods you were not paid for, and paying for goods you never received. A crane scale that drifts by even a small amount adds up quickly when you weigh steel, scrap or produce all day.
The short answer is at least once a year, with a Weights and Measures certificate if you use the scale for trade. Many busy sites in Nigeria choose to calibrate every three or six months. This guide explains why, and how to decide the right interval for your business.
What crane scale calibration means
Calibration compares the scale's reading against known, certified test weights and adjusts it so the display matches the true weight across its range. The technician records the results and, for trade scales, the scale is verified so you can show a certificate if a customer or inspector questions your weights.
It is different from simply pressing zero. Zeroing removes small offsets on an empty hook. Calibration corrects the scale's response to real loads.
How often to calibrate a crane scale: the minimum and the practical answer
The legal minimum
If you buy or sell goods by weight, your scale should be verified by Weights and Measures every year. Kira Scales provides certified calibration with the Weights and Measures certificate of verification, which is the legal minimum for trade use.
The practical answer for busy sites
Annual calibration is a floor, not a target. Crane scales work hard. They are lifted, swung, knocked and exposed to heat and dust. Many of our clients choose:
- Every 3 months for heavy daily use, such as steel yards, scrap dealers and ports
- Every 6 months for regular use in warehouses and workshops
- Every 12 months for light or occasional use in clean conditions
If your crane scale decides how much a customer pays, shorter intervals protect your income and your reputation.
Factors that shorten the calibration interval
Consider calibrating more often if any of these apply:
- High lift volume: hundreds of lifts a day wear the load cell and hook faster
- Heavy loads near capacity: working close to the maximum puts more strain on the scale
- Shock loading: dropping or jerking loads stresses the load cell
- Harsh environment: heat near furnaces, salt air in Lagos and Port Harcourt, or dust in Kano and Kaduna
- Movement between sites: scales moved around a lot are more likely to be knocked
- High-value goods: small errors on copper, aluminium or export goods cost more
Signs your crane scale needs calibration now
Do not wait for the scheduled date if you notice:
- The scale does not return to zero after a load is removed
- Readings change for the same item weighed twice
- Your weights no longer match a supplier's or customer's figures
- The reading drifts while a steady load is hanging
- The scale has been dropped, overloaded or hit
- A new battery, load cell or indicator has been fitted
Any of these means the scale should be checked before it is used for trade again.
What happens during a crane scale calibration
A typical Kira calibration visit includes:
- A visual check of the hook, shackle, body and battery
- A zero and repeatability test
- Loading with certified test weights at several points across the range
- Adjustment where readings fall outside tolerance
- A record of results and, for trade scales, verification and certificate
For larger crane scales, we use certified weights and rigging suited to the capacity. Test weights such as our Class M1 calibration weights set and cast-iron test weights are the kind of references used to prove accuracy. Our article on weighbridge calibration certificates explains why certified references matter.
Simple checks you can do between calibrations
You do not need to wait a whole year to know your scale is healthy. Keep a known reference weight on site, such as a tagged steel block or certified weight, and lift it once a week. Write the result in a logbook. If the reading moves away from the known value, call for calibration.
Also check zero at the start of every shift, and inspect the hook, shackle and battery before the first lift.
Keeping a calibration record
Keep a simple file for each crane scale with its serial number, capacity, calibration dates, certificates and any repairs. When a customer disputes a weight, this record shows you have looked after your equipment. It also helps you spot patterns, such as a scale that drifts faster than others and may need a new load cell.
Does a new crane scale need calibration?
Yes. A new scale should be checked and, if used for trade, verified before it goes into service. Shipping and handling can shift readings. When you buy from Kira, such as the 3 tonne digital crane scale or the 20 tonne heavy-duty crane scale, we can calibrate before handover so you start with a known, documented accuracy.
Calibration for any brand, anywhere in Nigeria
Kira Scales has worked in weighing since 2015. We calibrate and repair crane scales of any brand, and our technicians travel to all 36 states and the FCT, from Lagos and Abuja to Onitsha, Warri and Kano. The same team handles weighbridge calibration, so you can bring all your scales onto one service plan.
If your scale has a fault rather than simple drift, we can replace load cells and indicators. Browse our product range for replacements.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a crane scale be calibrated?
At least once a year, with Weights and Measures verification if used for trade. Busy sites often calibrate every three or six months.
Can I calibrate a crane scale myself?
You can check zero and test with a known weight, but certified calibration needs traceable test weights and a qualified technician. Trade scales also need official verification.
Why is my crane scale reading wrong after it was dropped?
A drop or shock load can damage or shift the load cell. Stop using it for trade and have it inspected and recalibrated.
Do I need a certificate for my crane scale?
If you buy or sell by weight, yes. A Weights and Measures certificate of verification shows your scale meets legal requirements.
Does Kira calibrate crane scales outside Lagos?
Yes. Our technicians cover all 36 states and the FCT.
