The XK3190 family of weighing indicators is everywhere in Nigeria – on platform scales in Onitsha markets, floor scales in Lagos warehouses and weighbridges at quarries and depots. The models look similar, which makes buying confusing. This XK3190 indicator comparison explains the differences between the three most requested models, the A9, A12E and A15, and when a different model makes more sense.
An indicator (also called a display head or weighing terminal) powers the load cells, reads their signal and shows the weight. Choosing the right one depends on where the scale is used, what it weighs and whether you need printing or a computer connection.
Quick Overview of the Three Models
- [XK3190-A9](/products/xk3190-a9-weighing-indicator) – a general-purpose indicator widely used on weighbridges and floor scales, with a bright display that is easy to read in an office or gatehouse.
- [XK3190-A12E](/products/xk3190-a12e-weighing-indicator) – a compact, popular choice for platform and floor scales, common in shops, markets and stores.
- [XK3190-A15](/products/xk3190-a15-waterproof-stainless-indicator) – a waterproof stainless steel indicator for wet, dusty or hygienic areas such as food processing, fisheries and abattoirs.
Exact features vary by version and supplier, so always check the product page for the specification of the unit you are buying.
XK3190 Indicator Comparison: Side by Side
Where each one fits
The A9 is a workhorse for larger scales. Weighbridge operators like it because it is familiar, simple to use and widely supported by technicians across the country. It is also used on heavy floor scales.
The A12E is designed around platform and floor scales. It suits trading, stores, farms and light industry, where the scale may be moved around and run on battery between power cuts.
The A15 is built for environments that would ruin a standard plastic or painted housing. Its stainless, sealed body tolerates washdown, splashing and humid air, which suits fish and meat processing, beverage plants and coastal sites in Lagos, Calabar and Port Harcourt.
Housing and protection
The A9 and A12E typically use housings suited to dry indoor positions such as an office desk or a sheltered stand. The A15 is the one to choose when water, steam or cleaning chemicals are present. Putting a standard indicator in a wet area is one of the most common reasons we see indicators fail early.
Power
Power supply is a big issue in Nigeria. Many XK3190 models can run on mains and an internal rechargeable battery, which helps during outages. Check the battery option on the specific model, and protect mains-powered indicators with a stabiliser or surge protection on weighbridge sites.
Connectivity
If you need to send weights to a computer, a printer or a remote display, check that the indicator has the right serial output. For weighbridges that will run ticketing software, a model built for PC connection such as the XK3190-D10 weighbridge indicator with RS232 is often the better choice.
Ease of use and calibration
All three have similar basic functions: zero, tare, and gross/net display, plus a calibration menu protected for technicians. Operators who know one model usually adapt quickly to another.
Cost drivers
Prices differ with housing material, display type, battery, outputs and brand version. See each product page for current pricing or request a quote – we can also bundle an indicator with load cells and a junction box.
Other XK3190 Models Worth Knowing
The A9, A12E and A15 are not the only options:
- XK3190-A12 – a simple indicator for smaller platform scales.
- [XK3190-A27E](/products/xk3190-a27e-weighing-indicator) – an LCD version, useful where low power use matters.
- [Weighing indicator with built-in printer](/products/weighing-indicator-with-built-in-printer) – prints tickets or receipts directly, handy for buying points and small weighbridges without a computer.
- XK3190-D10 – as above, for weighbridges connecting to software.
Which One Should You Buy?
Use this simple guide:
- Weighbridge or heavy floor scale in a dry office? The A9 is a solid, familiar choice. If you need software and reports, look at the D10.
- Platform or floor scale for a shop, store or farm? The A12E is compact and practical.
- Wet, washdown or corrosive area? Choose the A15.
- Need printed tickets without a computer? Choose an indicator with a built-in printer.
Remember that the indicator must match your load cells: analogue XK3190 indicators work with standard analogue cells, not with digital load cells. Digital load cells need a matching digital indicator or controller.
Looking After Your Indicator
Most indicator failures we see on Nigerian sites are avoidable. A few simple habits make any XK3190 model last longer:
- Keep it dry and shaded. Do not place a standard indicator where rain, spray or direct afternoon sun can reach it. In wet areas, use the A15.
- Protect the power supply. Generator switch-overs and unstable mains damage power boards. Use a stabiliser, UPS or surge protector, and earth the weighbridge properly.
- Look after the battery. On battery models, charge regularly and replace a battery that no longer holds charge, as a weak battery can cause unstable readings.
- Secure the cables. Keep the load cell cable connector tight and the cable away from doors, chairs and foot traffic.
- Restrict the setup menu. Only trained technicians should enter calibration settings. Unauthorised changes affect accuracy and your Weights and Measures verification.
- Keep it clean. Wipe the keypad and display with a dry or slightly damp cloth, never a hose or solvent, unless the model is designed for washdown.
Replacing an Old Indicator
Replacing a damaged indicator is usually straightforward, but the scale must be recalibrated afterwards, and for trade use it must be verified. Kira Scales replaces indicators on scales and weighbridges of any brand, then calibrates with certified test weights. See our weighbridge accessories and calibration pages for more.
We supply and fit indicators in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Ibadan, Aba and every other state.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the XK3190-A9 and A12E?
The A9 is widely used on weighbridges and heavy floor scales, while the A12E is a compact indicator aimed at platform and floor scales. Both handle standard analogue load cells.
Which XK3190 indicator is waterproof?
The XK3190-A15 has a sealed stainless steel housing designed for wet and washdown areas.
Can I connect an XK3190 indicator to a computer?
Many models have a serial output for a PC or printer. For weighbridge software, choose a model with the right output, such as the XK3190-D10.
Do I need to calibrate after changing the indicator?
Yes. A new indicator must be calibrated with test weights, and trade scales must be verified afterwards.
Will an XK3190 indicator work with my existing load cells?
It works with most standard analogue load cells. It will not work with digital load cells, which need a matching digital indicator.
