A pallet truck scale for warehouses combines a hand pallet jack with a built-in weighing system. You lift the pallet, read the weight on the indicator, and keep moving. There is no need to carry goods to a fixed scale, wait, and carry them back.
For busy warehouses, distribution centres and factories in Lagos, Ogun, Abuja, Onitsha and Port Harcourt, that saved walking time adds up across a shift. This guide explains how a pallet truck scale works, when it is the right choice, and what to check before you buy.
How a pallet truck scale works
A weighing pallet truck looks like a standard hand pallet jack. Load cells are fitted into the forks, usually four, and connected to a digital indicator mounted on the handle. When the forks lift the pallet clear of the floor, the load cells measure the weight and the indicator shows it.
Our 2 tonne pallet truck scale with digital indicator is a typical example. It is battery-powered, so it works anywhere in the warehouse, including loading bays and containers.
When a pallet truck scale makes sense
A pallet truck scale is a strong choice if:
- You move many pallets a day and weigh most of them
- Goods arrive and leave from different bays
- You need to check pallet weights before loading trucks or containers
- Floor space for a fixed scale is limited
- You want to catch short-packed or overweight pallets at receiving
It is especially useful for exporters checking container loads, distributors of beverages and building materials, and agro traders weighing bagged produce on pallets.
Pallet truck scale vs floor scale
Both weigh pallets, but they suit different work.
Pallet truck scale
- Mobile: weighs wherever the pallet is
- Combines moving and weighing into one step
- Good accuracy for logistics and stock checks
- Limited to pallets the forks can lift
Floor scale
- Fixed in one place
- Usually finer accuracy and higher capacity
- Accepts pallets, drums, sacks and odd shapes
- Better for trade weighing where every kilo is invoiced
Many warehouses use both. A 2 tonne U-beam pallet floor scale at the dispatch point, with a pallet truck scale for checks around the floor. Our floor scale range covers larger capacities.
What to look for when buying a pallet truck scale for warehouses
Capacity
Choose a capacity above your heaviest pallet. Most warehouse models are around 2 tonnes, which covers standard pallets of bagged goods, drinks and cartons.
Fork size
Check the fork length and width match your pallets. Standard and Euro pallets differ, and local wooden pallets in Nigeria vary a lot. Bring the measurements when you ask for a quote.
Indicator features
Look for tare, zero, hold and accumulation (adding up several pallets). Some indicators can print tickets or store weights, which helps stock records.
Battery life
With irregular power, a battery that lasts a full shift is essential. Ask about charging time and whether a spare is available.
Build quality
The truck will be pushed over rough floors and ramps. Strong forks, good wheels and protected load cell cables reduce downtime.
Getting accurate readings
A pallet truck scale is accurate when used correctly:
- Weigh on a flat, level floor, not on a ramp
- Lift the pallet just clear of the ground
- Let the reading settle before recording
- Keep the pallet centred on the forks
- Zero the scale with no load at the start of each shift
Avoid dropping pallets onto the forks. Shock loads are the most common cause of load cell damage.
Common uses in Nigerian warehouses
Here is how businesses typically use a weighing pallet truck:
- Receiving: checking supplier pallets of rice, sugar, flour or cement against the delivery note before signing
- Dispatch: confirming outgoing pallets match the invoice, which reduces disputes with customers
- Container loading: keeping a running total of pallet weights so containers and trucks are not overloaded
- Stock taking: weighing part-used pallets to estimate remaining quantity quickly
- Returns: checking returned goods before crediting a customer
Because the weighing happens during normal movement, staff are more likely to actually weigh every pallet instead of skipping the step when the warehouse is busy.
Calibration and maintenance
Like any scale, a weighing pallet truck needs regular checks. Kira provides scale calibration with Weights and Measures certificates where the weights are used for trade. Clients with heavy daily use often choose checks every three or six months.
Simple care helps too: keep the hydraulics serviced, charge the battery properly, and keep water away from the indicator.
Linking warehouse weighing to bigger operations
If your warehouse also receives full trucks, a pallet truck scale will not replace a weighbridge. Many of our clients use a weighbridge at the gate and pallet scales inside. Read our guide on the benefits of a weighbridge to see how they fit together.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is a pallet truck scale?
It is accurate enough for stock control, dispatch checks and most logistics work. For trade weighing where every kilo is invoiced, a calibrated floor scale is often preferred.
Can a pallet truck scale weigh on a slope?
No. Always weigh on a flat, level floor, or the reading will be wrong.
What capacity pallet truck scale do I need?
Most warehouses use about 2 tonnes. Choose a capacity above your heaviest pallet.
How long does the battery last?
It depends on the model and use. Charge fully before each shift and ask about spare batteries if you work long hours.
Can Kira repair a weighing pallet truck?
Yes. We repair load cells, indicators and wiring on pallet truck scales and other scales of any brand.
