This floor scale buying guide Nigeria businesses can use explains how to pick the right capacity, platform size, indicator and build for your work. A floor scale is often the busiest piece of equipment in a warehouse or factory, so a poor choice shows up every day as slow weighing, wrong readings or early breakdowns.
Whether you run a warehouse in Lagos, a feed mill in Kaduna, a cocoa store in Ibadan or a distribution centre in Onitsha, the same questions apply. Answer them before you request quotes and you will compare like with like.
What a floor scale does
A floor scale is a low, flat steel platform supported by load cells, usually four, connected to a digital indicator. Goods are placed on the platform by hand, trolley, pallet truck or forklift. It is ideal for sacks, drums, pallets, cartons, livestock and machinery that are too heavy or bulky for a bench scale.
Floor scale buying guide Nigeria, step 1: choose the right capacity
Start with your heaviest normal load, then add headroom. Working near the maximum every day shortens the life of the load cells.
- 1 tonne: bags, cartons and small pallets. A 1 tonne floor scale with a 1 m x 1 m platform suits shops, small warehouses and agro traders.
- 2 to 3 tonnes: full pallets, drums and general factory goods. Consider a 2 tonne floor scale, 1.5 m x 1.5 m or a 3 tonne floor scale with loading ramp.
- 5 tonnes: heavy industrial goods, steel coils and machinery. Look at a 5 tonne heavy-duty floor scale, 1.5 m x 2 m.
Resolution matters too. Higher capacity usually means a larger division (for example 0.5 kg or 1 kg). If you need finer readings on small items, a bench or platform scale may be a better fit.
Step 2: Choose the platform size
The platform must be bigger than the largest item or pallet you weigh. Goods hanging over the edge give wrong readings and can damage the frame.
Standard sizes include 1 m x 1 m, 1.2 m x 1.2 m, 1.5 m x 1.5 m and 1.5 m x 2 m. Measure your pallets and the space where the scale will sit, including room for a forklift or pallet truck to approach.
Step 3: Surface or pit installation
Most floor scales sit on top of the floor, about 80 to 100 mm high. Loading is by hand, forklift or a ramp. A ramp makes it easy to push trolleys and pallet trucks onto the scale.
For heavy pallet traffic, some factories set the scale into a shallow pit so it is level with the floor. This needs civil work and good drainage, especially in the rainy season, but it speeds up loading. Our team can advise which option suits your building.
Step 4: Pick the indicator
The indicator is the scale's brain. Common choices include:
- A standard digital indicator such as the XK3190-A12E for general use
- A waterproof stainless indicator for wet or dusty areas
- An indicator with a built-in printer for weight tickets
- A data output to send weights to a computer or remote display
If you need records for stock control or invoicing, plan for printing or computer connection from the start.
Step 5: Build quality and environment
Check the platform steel thickness, the quality and protection rating of the load cells, and the paint or galvanising. In humid coastal cities like Lagos, Port Harcourt and Warri, corrosion is the enemy. In food or chemical plants, a stainless steel or washdown design is worth considering.
Ask whether the scale has overload protection and stops. Forklifts dropping pallets onto the platform cause many load cell failures.
Step 6: Power and backup
Many floor scale indicators run on mains power with a rechargeable battery. With unstable power, a good battery keeps you weighing through outages. Protect the scale with a surge protector or stabiliser.
Common mistakes when buying a floor scale
We often see the same problems when visiting sites:
- Choosing a platform too small for the pallets actually used
- Placing the scale on an uneven or cracked floor
- Skipping the ramp, so staff lift heavy goods on by hand
- Buying without a printer, then writing weights by hand later
- Ignoring corrosion protection in wet or coastal areas
What affects floor scale cost
We do not list figures here because prices change with stock and the exchange rate. See the product page for current pricing or request a quote. The main cost drivers are:
- Capacity and platform size
- Mild steel, galvanised or stainless steel construction
- Load cell grade and protection
- Indicator features such as printing and data output
- Ramps, pit frames and accessories
- Delivery, installation and calibration
Calibration and legal use
If you buy or sell goods by weight, your floor scale should be verified by Weights and Measures at least once a year. Kira provides certified calibration with the certificate of verification, and many clients choose checks every three or six months.
When a floor scale is not enough
If you weigh whole trucks of produce, a floor scale cannot do the job. In that case read our guide to choosing the right weighbridge for your business or view our weighbridges.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size floor scale do I need?
Choose a platform larger than your biggest pallet or item, and a capacity comfortably above your heaviest normal load. Measure the space where the scale will sit too.
Can a forklift drive onto a floor scale?
Forklifts usually place pallets on the scale rather than drive onto it, unless the scale is rated and built for that. Ask us before you buy.
How much is a floor scale in Nigeria?
It depends on capacity, platform size, materials and indicator features. See the product page for current pricing or request a quote.
Do floor scales need calibration?
Yes. Trade use needs Weights and Measures verification at least once a year, and busy sites often calibrate more often.
Can I print tickets from a floor scale?
Yes, with an indicator that has a built-in printer or a connected printer.
